A new film program heralds the onset of spring from September-November at Southgate Cinema, Melbourne’s only silent cinema. A new season of the long-running and free Tuesday movie nights will be programed until May 2015.

Already an attractive anomaly as a free deckchair cinema, Southgate Cinema now offers a unique ‘Blue Class’ experience with a movie menu delivered to your deckchair from next-door eatery Bluetrain, recently refurbished with a critically acclaimed new design. The full menu can be viewed here.

Southgate cinephiles can devour gourmet pizzas and graze on an eclectic variety of tasting platters with selections including a Bollywood platter, soft shell taco platter and Chinese five spice chicken ribs as they sit back and watch films like The Book Thief, Tracks and The Hunger Games 2: Catching Fire, with headphones and audio kits.

In November, Southgate Cinema films celebrate the theme of freedom with Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, 12 Years a SlaveandInside Llewlyn Davis programed along with acclaimed but selectively screened Australian film Around the Block, about an Aboriginal boy in Redfern torn between his unexpected love of acting and the disintegration of his family.
