FRINGEWORLD 2017 – Simon Taylor – Spectacular-ish! (4 stars)

Review by Kieran Eaton

A comedian that opens with a magic trick can sometimes make us wonder if we are in the right show – but Simon Taylor is very much a comedian. Simon Taylor – Spectacular-ish, magically crafts a mixture of comedic material, with style. It is clear from the get-go that Taylor has a love and respect for stand-up.

Like many other FRINGEWORLD 2017 performers, Taylor’s background is typical – an Arts student who is slightly left of centre.  Still, he can handle diverse audiences with his friendly body language and tone. Tayor interacts with the crowd in a very charming manner. For example, when a couple comes in late and he greets them warmly, but still has a cheeky little dig.

From the start, Taylor turns an old magic trick to a modern piss-take. Taylor appears to be in the comedic zone – his jokes run smoothly, even with laughter from different areas. My view is that he embraces the challenge of dealing with people not like him. Sometimes it gets a bit awkward – with the crowd interaction not adding much to the show, however, Taylor remains unfazed. The highlight of the show is his comedic skill in delivering punchline, even with awkward situations.

This show is a performance catered for all, so go if you want to see a high level Australian entertainer. After watching Simon Taylor – Spectacular-ish, you will feel like you’ve hung with that cheeky mate that just wants you to smile.
