Walking into The Engine Room at The State Theatre Centre WA, you never quite know what to expect – but being greeted by a woman in white and asked to take a flower to make a wish is not what I would have thought would happen!
Singaporean performance artist, Sharda Harrison beams at the audience filing in clutching flowers. She addresses us all in a calm and friendly voice – it’s like going to a yoga or meditation retreat.
Harrison tells three stories through movement, dance and acting, each one near flawless. A young girl grows up in a zoo and fears the cruel beauty of the zoo’s snakes. Remiscent of the wonderous language of the Just So Stories and Life of Pi Harrison moves sinuously and with a hypnotising, dream-like quality.
She then transforms her entire demeanour into an old Singaporean Aunty with an almost troop of hungry cats. Harrison is a phenomenal actress, she channels the old woman to the point that it feels like she is right in front of you – when she breaks character it drags you back into the play.
The final character is probably the most heartfelt one. Harrison embodies a man on the brink of losing everything – except his profound love of the noble orang utan. The story is simple, beautiful and kind.
If you want to feel the warmth of childhood stories of the exotic or human affection, Temuan (the meeting) is the show for you.
