FRINGEWORLD 2017 – Bart Freebairn – Relax and Enjoy (4 Stars)

Review by Kieran Eaton

Bart Freebairn – Relax and Enjoy is the solo show of comedian Bart Freebairn. Freebairn being a confident, young comic who stands tall and just talks about himself and his world. His world is probably not much different to ours but he has the honesty to tell it like is with playfulness.

This Melbourne-based comic is so zen about his comedy it sometimes feels that he would not care if the crowd was meditating while he performed. This gives a weird energy to the night, as often comedians thrive on a bit of tension but Freebairn appears to want us to chill and come together as one.

He even states that if you feel that if this is not for you there is no pressure to stay. His monologue has a conversational style but the interactions he has with the crowd are mild and just used to gain extra laughs. He gives the audience trust in his journey and the audience go with it.

Freebairn opens up about doing fitness just to look good (but he eat lots of cheesecake – and boy does love cheesecake!) Let’s be honest – we can all relate to his frustration in dealing with fitness personal trainers so this makes us feel comfortable laughing at the stupid situations we all put ourselves in.

You get a feeling that Freebairn does not take life too seriously, as he is brutally honest when an audience member states her hatred of the use of the c-word. He has already charismatically won over the audience when he argues his appreciation for the word, including his usage on his closest friends.

This FRINGEWORLD 2017 show is nothing spectacular but it is solid throughout. If you want to see a slightly surreal, observational comedian, come see this guy.
