East Malvern Food and Wine Festival – Melbourne

The perfect Sunday is made up of three S’s – sunshine, snacks, and sangria. Luckily, each element aligned at the East Malvern Food and Wine Festival on Sunday 19th November. Now in its second year, the festival brings together the best of Victoria’s culinary scene, from local faces including Riserva Wine, to Melbourne-wide favourites such as Burn City. Where to begin?
Walking through beautiful Central Park, the first stop…the wine stalls of course! Just $20 scored you 4 tastings, and the opportunity to have a chat with the winemakers, who’d come from as far as Bendigo and Heathcote. I’m a sucker for red wine, and could easily have stayed all day. However, my coffee-loving friend soon sniffed out the Mr. Black stand, and before I knew it we were trying their cold brew coffee liqueur. It was sweet, syrupy, but packed a punch, giving us a well-timed energy boost as we browsed the lunch options.
Again, my friend and I were drawn in different directions. We decided to wander off in search of our favourite foods, and meet up again at the central stalls which had a distinctly French feel. Crème brulee, toasted nuts, and raclette – what could be better than that for bringing people together?
I returned triumphant with a gourmet pork Kransky roll from Uncle’s Small Goods (https://www.unclessmallgoods.com/).The Kransky was one of the best I’ve tasted; it had been smoked over wood, and was served with sauerkraut and pickles brined in garlic, salt, and oil. Delicious! My friend opted for the rich, tomatoey, seafood paella from El Rincon, which hit the spot paired with a fresh, fruity sangria. We followed the lead of several groups and settled down on the grass to eat, listening to the band and watching the cute dogs running around the park.
