The Australia Times News welcomes Sydney writer, Andrew Kemp, to the team. Andrew’s first culinary adventure was to attend a Media Preview this week, at Bar Patrón By Rockpool. During the evening a memorable Set Menu and Tequila Flight were served ahead of World Tequila Day 24th July 2018.
It’s hard to imagine a more desirable location in Sydney to sip on a perfectly clear margarita and relish some fresh Mexican staples, than Bar Patrón by Rockpool, in Circular Quay. The sublime view over Sydney Harbour Bridge served as backdrop to our preview tasting of the treat that awaits tequila lovers this coming Tuesday, 24 July. To celebrate World Tequila Day, Bar Patrón is complementing its popular set menu with a flight of 3 tequilas of your choice from their exclusive Barrel Select Series. These range from a spicy-sweet 7-month old Reposado, aged in Hungarian oak casks, to a smooth 23-month old, bourbon-cask aged Añejo.
The set menu kicked off with salsas and corn chips, accompanied by a generous bowl of made-to-order guacamole. A zesty tuna salad delivered freshness on the palate, with the addition of peanuts adding a pleasant twist. I matched the starters with a Paloma cocktail, picking up just a hint of cinnamon.
The mains arrived as a variety of tacos and tortillas, with my pick of the tacos being the fried flathead and the grilled pork, paired with pineapple and green salsa. The tortillas with fragrant, beer-marinated skirt steak were the highlight of the mains – even Head Chef Pamela Valdés declared it her favourite dish on the menu! In contrast to the hearty steak, the superbly cooked fish tortilla and the zucchini flower enchiladas provided a more delicate counterpoint.
We threw caution to the wind and rounded the evening out by sharing a delicious flan (with just a touch of tequila, of course!), and a portion of surprisingly light Tres Leches cake.
If it’s sheer hedonism you are after, opt for the “Millionaire’s Margarita” – a $100 extravagance, made tableside from Gran Patrón Burdeos tequila, 50+ year old Grand Marnier, nitrogen-frozen finger lime spheres, and a spritz of Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac. Topped with gold leaf, naturally!
All in all – look no further for the ideal spot to celebrate World Tequila day. And trust me on the clarified margarita – it’s a winner.
The Set Menu, including a flight of 3 exclusive tequilas, will be available for $65pp on Tuesday, 24 July.
