Part 2
Introduction to Multiplication
The picture above shows that there are two flowers and there
are three ladybugs on each flower; therefore, the total number of
ladybugs is six. This statement can be written using this following
mathematical equation
which denote
two
groups of
three
and it can be read as
two times three equals six
or
two multiplied by three equals six

Title : The Short Giraffe
Author : Neil Flory
Cover : Mark Cleary
Publisher : Allen & Unwin
Publication Date : 1 July 2013
Type : Picture book
ISBN : 9781743315071
For ages : 3–5
This delightful book is fun for everyone. It has
something for the parents reading it with the gentle
humour and warm illustrations. Boba the baboon
wants to take photos of the tallest animals in the
world, but there is a small, or short, problem. Geri,
the shortest giraffe who ever lived is spoiling the
photos, because he is, well, just too short! The story
then follows the various mad antics of the giraffes'
as they try to solve the problem. It's a lovely book
about fitting in, or not fitting in and how trial and
error will sometimes win the day. For 3-5 year olds.
Title : Wildlife
Author : Fiona Wood
Cover : Pan Mcmillian
Publisher : Pan Macmillan Australia
Publication Date : 1 June 2013
Type : Teen fiction
ISBN : 9781742612317
For ages : 14/15++
FIONA WOOD is a scriptwriter who has turned
her hand to writing for teenagers, and she is very
good at it. Her two books, Six Impossible Things
and now Wildlife are amongst the best around for
this age group.
Fiona Wood’s new book Wildlife refers to some char-
acters from her earlier book, Six Impossible Things,
but it isn’t necessary to have read that before this
one. Wildlife is set during the term where students go
to a wilderness camp, away from home and without
technology for the whole time. They are supposed to
learn independence, new skills and look after their
body, and maybe, even, get fit. Sybilla and her best
friend Holly are allocated the same house, along with

a new girl, Lou. Lou is very quiet and self contained,
and is not interested in participating in many group
activities, and is certainly not interested in the petty
and complicated rituals Holly sets up. Nerdy, but
lovely Michael is another good friend of Sybilla’s,
but most of the other kids don’t get him, but Lou does.
As Lou starts to warm up to some of the students,
Sybilla starts to realise that so metimes best friends
can be toxic and that the people you take for grant-
ed are really the ones you should care most about.
And as for the rules of being a girlfriend, maybe she
just isn’t cut out for it yet. This book is just as good as
Six Impossible Things, in fact it’s probably a better
book. Warning: there is a first sexual encounter, but
it isn’t graphic at all. For teens. 14/15 up
Title : Vanguard Prime
Author : Steve Lochran
Image : Penguin Australia
Publisher : Penguin Australia
Type : Teen fiction
For ages : 9–13
VANGUARD PRIME is a series aimed 9-13 year
olds. There are currently two books in the series, the
first one is called Goldrush. Sam Lee is an ordinary
kid until one day his superpowers are revealed in a
surprising and unfortunate way. Before he knows it
he is whisked off to the................ and kitted out with
an uncomfortable, but amazing custom made suit,
and given a new name, Goldrush. Sam is worried
that Goldrush might sound a bit girly, but the name
has been thoroughly focus grouped and the public
responded favourably to it, so Goldrush it is. There
are lots of gadgets and computer aided adventures
and while Sam feels terribly out of his depth at first,
he starts to get the hang of things and starts to use
his super speed to his advantage. The author, Steve
Lochran, is a young Melbourne man and he has hit
the mark with a fast paced, but well written book
for kids who like a superhero story. Sam isn’t a fully
formed super hero yet, but he is learning fast. The
third book in the series will be out soon.
