Once upon a time, when the winter snow lay deep
around Castle Clearwater, the peace was broken by the
King’s mighty bellow.
Servants came running, like agitated geese.
“Queen Rose is missing. Search the castle, summon
my knights. We must find her,” King Matt spoke in a
voice that echoed around the Great Hall.
The servants fluttered off,
ducking into rooms, prying into
corners, looking in cupboards
and under the beds trying to
find Queen Rose.
Gardeners came in
through the snow and ran to bow
to the King. “There are no tracks
in the snow, Sire. No one can
have left on foot or horse. She
must have left by magic.”
“Where are my knights?
Why aren’t they here?”

The Shoemaker
Charlie.…
“I’ll go,” a young male voice
spoke up. “I will go and ask Wizard
Roman to look for her.”
The King looked for the
owner of the voice and saw Charlie,
the young blond haired shoemaker.
“It is a job for my knights, Charlie. You are a good
boy, but you don’t know how to fight or ride.”
“Can’t ride through the snow, Sire. Will have
to walk.”
“No, No, Charlie. You stay here.
Queen Rose would not forgive me
if I risked you. She thinks highly
of your skill.”
“Please Sire; The Queen is so
special that we all want to help
find her. She must have been
taken by an evil wizard.”

The King’s attention went to
where one of his knights had just
run into the Great Hall, half clad in
clinking armour.
Knight Tristan bowed, and said
quickly, “I am at your service, Sire.
What do you need?”
“The Queen is missing, stolen
by a wizard. I need you to help find her,”
King Matt ordered. “Go and ask Wizard Roman
to look for her.”
“Who will go with me?” he asked,
looking around.
“I’ll go,” Charlie offered again.
Knight Tristan looked around, saw the boy and laughed.
“You? You’re just a shoemaker.”
King Matt raised his voice. “Time is wasting. Go then,
Shoemaker. When Prince Damian returns, I will send him
after you.”
Charlie raced to put on his outdoor shoes and a cloak, and
to fetch his tools. He never went anywhere without them.
Knight Tristan finished dressing in his armour, and stalked
out into the snow without waiting for the shoemaker.

Outside, the snow was knee deep and more was
falling thickly from the sky. Charlie frisked along the
cleared path made by Knight Tristan. When he caught
up to the knight, he hopped through the snow like an
excited puppy. His satchel of tools bounced on his back.
The knight ignored him, and kept trudging through the
snow.
“If it keeps snowing, it will
soon be up to our waists,”
Charlie said excitedly.
Knight Tristan growled.
“I’m in charge. Be quiet and
don’t dawdle. We are to
ask Wizard Roman to look in
his crystal ball to see where
Queen Rose is.”
Charlie, who secretly dreamed of being a knight,
ignored Tristan’s irritation and daydreamed of saving
the Queen single-handed. Then he sighed. He had no
sword, nor any weapons - just his tools. Maybe the
wizard would give him a sword.
Straightening his posture, Charlie imitated Knight
Tristan’s imposing stride.

Wizard Roman was looking
in his crystal ball when Knight
Tristan clanked into Watchdog
Tower, dropping clods of muddy
snow onto the wooden floor.
“I know why you are here, Knight
Tristan,” he said with a glare at the
knight. “My rival and enemy, Wizard
Federick has taken the Queen
to Greyskull Tower. You must go
there and rescue her. I cannot send
you that far.”
“Of course. I am a brave and
fearless knight. You will come with us to fight his
magic,” Knight Tristan proclaimed.
“Oh, no, Knight Tristan. I must remain here to
protect the kingdom from further danger. However, I
can give you a magic compass that will always point in
the direction of the Queen.”
Knight Tristan snatched the compass from the
wizard’s out stretched hand and watched the needle
spin towards the south.

“I’m going too,” Charlie the Shoemaker said,
standing up straight and looking fierce.
Wizard Roman looked up and down his five foot of
height. “I see. Yes, I have a length of magic leather.
In case you need to make new shoes on your journey.
It will be a long trek to Greyskull Tower.”
Charlie had hoped for a magic sword, and tried to
hide his disappointment. But when he felt the tingle
of magic in the soft leather and caught the wizard’s
wink, his spirits rose. “I make the best shoes in all of
Clearwater,” he said.
“Come on
Shoemaker,” Knight
Tristan ordered.
“We have to head
south, through the forest.
We haven’t got all day.”
Knight Tristan stalked
off, leaving Charlie to
trot after him and try
to stuff the leather into
his satchel with his tools.
The magic leather obliged
by seeming to take up
less space.

Once they had passed through the
forest, the snow was waist deep. Knight
Tristan strode into it, kicking it and
chucking armfuls out of his way. Charlie
followed in the path the knight made, but
had to jump backward. He had just seen
something fly over his head and land just
ahead in the snow and Knight Tristan
had suddenly stopped and tried to draw
his sword.
Luckily for Prince Damian, Knight
Tristan had trouble drawing his sword.
“I thought you were a dragon,” Knight
Tristan said, annoyed by the fright.
“How did you get here?” Charlie demanded. He
scrambled up to get on top of the snow, but only
succeeded in collapsing the sides of the cleared path.
Prince Damian groaned, “My father sent me after
you, and the wizard sent me here by magic. Gee, I hate
snow! Anyway, what’s a shoemaker doing out here when
there is real work to be done?”

The Snow Shoes…
Charlie the Shoemaker stood up
straight and said, “I can make shoes so that
we can travel really fast on top of the snow.”
By then Knight Tristan was heartily tired
of pushing through snow. “Go on then, make the
shoes.”
Charlie took out the magic leather and his
tools and got to work. When the shoes were
finished, Prince Damian and Knight Tristan tossed
their old boots aside donned the new one and ran off
on top of the snow, following the direction indicated
by the magic compass. Charlie picked up the discarded
boots, packed them into his satchel and put the supple
leather around his shoulders like a shawl. He followed
the sliding footmarks in the snow. When he caught up
to Prince Damian and Knight Tristan, they were each
clinging to a tree on the edge of a steep cliff. Their
feet were trying to take them over the edge.
“How did you bewitch these shoes, Shoemaker,”
Prince Damian asked. “We can’t stop.”
Charlie shrugged. “Why don’t you take them off?”
“What and walk in the snow with stockinged feet?”
Prince Damian demanded.

“We don’t have other shoes,” Knight Tristan
admitted, his face red with embarrassment. Keeping
his mirth to himself Charlie offered, “I can make shoes
to climb down the cliff.”
When the shoes were finished, Prince Damian
and Knight Tristan quickly climbed down out of sight,
leaving Charlie the shoemaker to pick up his tools
and the leather, and to sling the snowshoes over one
shoulder. Without hurrying, Charlie climbed down the
cliff and found the Prince and the Knight on a rocky
ledge, staring across a broad lake. As he went to where
they stood, he saw Prince Damian try to lift a foot that
seemed to want to cling to the rock. He slipped his
feet from the shoes, found they were now loose and
flung them away in annoyance. He put one stockinged
foot into the water.
“This water is freezing,” Prince
Damian complained. “Tristan, you
will have to carry me
across.”
“I can’t do that! The
water will rust my armour.”

The Water Shoes….
Charlie straightened to his full
five foot height and proclaimed,
“I can make you shoes so that you
can walk on top of the water.”
“Hurry up. My feet are cold,”
Prince Damian ordered.
As soon as the water shoes were finished, Prince
Damian and Knight Tristan rushed off, leaving Charlie to
pack his tools, and pick up the snow shoes and the climbing
shoes.
When Charlie the Shoemaker reached the far side
of the lake, he stopped just short of the far bank where
Knight Tristan and Prince Damian were knee deep in mud.
“I am your Prince,” Damian was insisting. “Carry me
out of the mud.”
Knight Tristan lifted Prince Damian, but sank deeper
into the mud. He dropped the Prince and tried to scramble
out.
“Hey! How am I to get the mud out of my clothes?”
Prince Damian demanded.
“You could try jumping in the lake,” Tristan growled.
“You will need to help me out first.”

Prince Damian looked at the
shoemaker as if thinking to order him
to help the floundering Knight,
but Charlie the Shoemaker was
standing on the water making yet
another set of shoes.
“Take those water shoes off,” Charlie said at last.
These shoes will let you walk on top of the mud.”
When Tristan had reached down into the mud and freed
his feet, he seemed to have risen a bit from the mud. He
tossed the water shoes aside and caught the mud shoes
Charlie tossed at him. He forced the shoes into the mud
and onto his feet and rose to the top of the mud.
Prince Damian kicked off his muddy water shoes and
pulled on the clean mud shoes. Checking the magic compass
again, Prince Damian and Knight Tristan slid off over the
mud at a fast pace.
Shoemaker Charlie packed his tools, and set off across
the mud carrying the snowshoes, the climbing shoes and
the water shoes.
Prince Damian and Knight Tristan came to the end of
the mud and found their shoes no longer worked.
“What is wrong with these shoes?” Knight Tristan
demanded. “We can’t move.”

The Dry Land Shoes….
“Of course not!” said the Charlie. He was trying not
to laugh at how silly they looked hopping up and down
in one spot. “You are now on dry land. I can make you
shoes so you can walk really fast on land.”
When the shoes were finished, Prince Damian and
Knight Tristan rushed off towards where the top of
an ugly grey tower showed above a forest of trees.
Shoemaker Charlie picked up his tools, the snowshoes,
the climbing shoes, the water shoes, the mud shoes
and followed them.
They walked for hours and hours, following the
magic compass.

Finally, they neared the hill with
Greyskull Tower perched on top.
They saw the evil wizard, Federick,
throw something from a high window.
A ring of fire sprang up around the
tower. The wizard’s evil cackling voice
shouted, “Queen Rose is mine! You
have no chance. Surrender before my
guards and my dragons kill you.”
“We can’t get through that,”
Prince Damian exclaimed. “I’ll get my
clothes burnt,” said Prince Damian.
“I’ll get cooked in my armour,” said Knight Tristan.
Finally, Charlie had had enough. “You call yourselves
brave Knights? All you have done all they way here is
whine and complain. I will walk in there and get Queen
Rose.”
“You? You don’t know how to fight. You don’t have
any weapons,” Knight Tristan reminded him. “This is
work for Knights. We will fight the guards and the
dragons and save the Queen. Can you make us some
boots that we can use to walk on fire?”

The Fire Shoes….
“Of course I can,” said
Shoemaker Charlie, standing
straight and pretending not to be
scared. Prince Damian and Knight Tristan
had drawn their swords and were looking
to see where the sounds of bellowing
dragons were coming from.
When the shoes were finished, Knight
Tristan quickly tossed his land shoes aside and put his
fire shoes on. With his head filled with visions
of glory and honour, he strode through the
fire and began to fight the Wizard Federick’s
guards.
Not wanting to be thought a coward, Prince
Damian drew his sword and followed Knight Tristan.
Shoemaker Charlie
packed his tools,
picked up the
snowshoes, and the
climbing shoes, the
water shoes, the mud shoes, the
walk fast shoes, and followed.

Only then, when he
saw Tristan and Damian
fighting guards, did
Shoemaker Charlie begin
to be afraid. He had no weapons but his scissors and
sewing needles. But he wanted to be a fearless knight
so he scurried after Prince Damian, keeping his head
down as blasts of fire lanced above him.
“Have you shoes for fighting dragons, Shoemaker?”
the Prince demanded as he ducked another blast
of fire.
Charlie said, “I can make you boots to let you fly
after the dragons.”
“Hurry up about it then, or we will be roasted for
the dragon’s dinner.”
Charlie dumped the spare shoes and began. He was
almost out of magic leather. As soon as he was finished,
Prince Damian swapped his shoes and flew off to slay
dragons and earn himself honour and glory.

Shoes for Sale….
A few of the guards spotted him and
came running, Charlie picked up shoes, ready
to fling them. “Shoes for sale,” he shouted
over the clash of sword on armour. “Magic
shoes that let you walk on water…”
“Get out of the way, shoemaker,” one of
the guards said, lowering his sword. “This is
no place for you.”
“Yes, sir,” Charlie agreed. “Certainly
good sir.” He bowed respectfully at the
guards who ignored him and went back to
fight Tristan.
Making it seem like he was picking up
his shoes, Charlie exchanged his shoes for
climbing shoes, put his satchel over his
shoulder and ran for the base of the tower.
He began to climb, as he heard Wizard
Federick ordering his guards to fight harder.
The voice was coming from a window not far
above him. Charlie edged away from the voice
towards another window. He heard arrows
strike the brickwork below him and climbed
faster, reaching a window and falling into a
rounded stone chamber.

“Charlie!” Queen Rose exclaimed. “How did you get
here?”
“No time to tell, my Queen. I can make us shoes to
take us home in no time. I have to hurry.”
“I saw Prince Damian out there flying after the
dragon,” Queen Rose said.
“He is brave and fierce. I made him flying shoes,”
Charlie said as he handed Queen Rose a pair of shoes.
He put his own on and went to the window.
Charlie called out the window at Tristan and Damian.
“When you both have finished getting glory and honour,
Queen Rose and I will see you back at Castle Clearwater.
Don’t forget to pick up your shoes.”
When they got back to the castle, King Matt made
Shoemaker Charlie a Knight.
King Matt and Queen Rose lived happily ever after.

Title : Meet Captain Cook
Author : Rae Murdie
Illustrator : Chris Nixon
Publisher : Random House Australia
Publication Date : 1 August 2013
Type : Picture book
ISBN : 9780857980175
For ages : 5–7
This picture book is part of a series of books, Meet
Captain Cook is about men and women who have
helped shape the history of Australia. This one is
about the explorer Captain Cook and has beautiful
illustrations by Chris Nixon. You might think a pic-
ture book would be aimed at very young children,
but this has a surprising amount of information
about Cook and his voyages in it. Others in the se-
ries are Ned Kelly, Saint Mary McKillop and Doug-
las Mawson. Something a little more challenging
for a young reader. They are really nicely done.

Recently we spent an evening selling books at a
school event where Morris Gleitzman was the guest
speaker. I had heard him speak at a conference
many years ago, so I was interested to hear him
again. As you would expect of this funny, prolific
author of books for children, he was amusing and
told some great stories about how he writes and
what books he has loved over his lifetime. As we
were putting out the books for sale, I was reminded
of just how many books he has written. It was a
truly impressive body of work, and they range from
the silly to the very serious. Even his funny books

have a message, but as all good writers can do, he
gets his message across in an enjoyable and non
didactic manner. This is especially true of his quar-
tet of books set around the Holocaust which begins
with Once. This might sound like a terrible subject
for children, but in his hands it is truly brilliant.
His latest book, Extra Time revolves around soccer,
which Morris has been carefully researching. He
was particularly interested in how a family copes
when they have a very talented sporty kid in their
lives. In the book, 13 year old Matt is offered the
chance of a lifetime to go to Europe to try out for
one of the big clubs. His younger sister goes with
him, and she tells the story. Having lead a fairly
closed in life, after a family tragedy, they find that
maybe, having your dreams come true isn’t always
what it is cracked up to be. Hat’s off again to Mor-
ris Gleitzman for being able to tell another story
that will appeal to both boys and girls, children
and parents, will be loved by kids, and will prob-
ably win awards. There aren’t many authors whose
books are loved by all of those groups and whose
appearance on reading lists at schools doesn’t
make the student’s hearts sink. Suitable for 10
years and up.
