Have you seen the fairy penguins
As they come in from the sea?
They cross the beach at evening
So the birds of prey won’t see.
Their bellies are so full of fish
They bring for their babies’ tea,
That they can barely waddle.
So comical to see.
They struggle up the sand dunes,
Through the coastal scrub to home.
You wonder if they’ll make it
To the chicks they left alone.
Ignoring other babies
Till they recognize their own,
The straightaway they feed them
And nestle down at home.
Do they dream? I wonder,
Of the days they spent at sea?
Of sunny days, or thunder,
Of the joy of swimming free?
Do they recall the dangers
They sometimes faced at sea?
Or just the loving thoughts of babies
Left at home without their tea?

Coming to Australia

It was one gloomy day in England and a man
called Bill, was packing away the rest of the
things in his house. Bill was 49 years old and
was about to leave for Australia with his wife,
Yvonne and his 3 children Maureen, Melvyn
and Jackie.
They wanted a new life after the Blitz in World
War 2. Bill and his wife had both been fire
fighters during the terrible Blitz and wanted to
leave the memories behind for new adventures.
Bill said “This will be a big adventure!” but
Yvonne was a little bit nervous about coming
to Australia. She would be leaving her family
and friends behind and she did not know when
she would see them again. Australia was very
far away and they were going to go there by
boat. The children were overwhelmed with
excitement about coming for a new life. Bill had
worked and saved his money and paid 10 pounds

for all of them to go to a new country. He was
an electrician and had already had a job waiting
for him in Australia.
Bill and his family headed to a town called
Southampton and got on a big boat that was
headed to Australia. The boat was called the
Iberia and had other families going to Australia
on it too. The sailors on the boat liked to show
all the children funny things—they saw monkeys
in Gibraltar and flying fish near the equator.
It took a long time for them to come to Australia.
At first they landed in Perth. Bill was waiting
for his job but all the job’s had gone so they
headed on to Sydney. Bill was getting worried
that he wouldn’t get enough money to look after
his family but he tried not to show it. Finally he
found a new job in Qld and it was cane cutting.
He got money for his job so he could look after
his family again.

Sometimes Yvonne would be frightened when
Bill and the other workers lit fires in the cane
fields but Bill would tell her that everything
was ok and that the fires moved the snakes out
of the field and made the cane easier to cut.
Bill and Yvonne worked very hard and saved up
every spare cent that they could. Soon they had
enough money to buy a shop of their own. They
sold groceries and newspapers. The shop was on
a road that ran by the Brisbane River and Bill
liked to watch the boats and ships sail along the
river. It reminded him of the days he had been
a sailor when he was a young man and he had
sailed the world looking for adventure and now
he was in Australia.
When Bill and his family came his job was to be
an electrician for his trade but he worked many
jobs in the end. He had been a cane cutter, a
shop owner, a security guard for the Ampol fuel
refinery and a wards man in a special hospital for

Australia and Yvonne wasn’t nervous anymore
plus the kids were having a blast and everyone
was happy in this sunny land.
Eventually they retired to the country and enjoyed

OUTBACK
THE
AUSTRALIA
TIMES
®
This magazine is intending to reflect the unique
character of the everyday people of Australia's vast
outback country.
It will present the stories, verses, humour, photography
and art of those who have lived there in the past,
or who live there now: lives often reflecting extreme
isolation in a sometimes temperamental landscape,
tales of survival and tragedy, every aspect of life in a
land that was old when man himself was young. Its
pages will also preserve the thoughts and aspirations,
of men and women who desire to acquaint themselves
with the beauties and terrors of that ancient, whispering
country that is the essential substance of Australia's
true spirit, far beyond sight of the coastal cities, towns
and settlements where the majority of the population
congregate.
Our pages will not only carry the experiences of
successful entrepreneurs, but also the vision of
ordinary adventurers, the battlers and victims, including
those who left their dreams and bones in waterless
deserts and sleep for ever beneath the sands, safe
from the swirling, flaring bushfires, the blinding dust
storms and the floods that wash away droughts.

Damian was saying ‘Goodbye’ to the last of his
friends when he saw his grandfather’s car arrive
at the football ground. Grandad always drove him
home after the Saturday practice game. The footy
coach had picked up hamburgers and cokes to give
a bit of a farewell party at the end of the practice
session. Damian and his family were leaving to live
in Queensland and he wasn’t very happy about it.
He hadn’t been able to find out if they had Junior
Football teams in Queensland. A.F.L., that is. He had
a sneaking suspicion that they only played Rugby
there, and he hadn’t the foggiest idea how to play
that game. He would miss all his friends from the
Wombats team, too, and that was the worst thing
about it.
Everybody said things like “Stop complaining.”
“You’ll make friends playing Rugby.”
“They’ll have Junior Teams up there.”
‘Well how would they know?’ he thought, ‘Anyway,
I don’t even know how to play Rugby. It’s a stupid
game. Not as good as football.’

KIDS
Damian mumbled away to himself as he slouched
across the soggy field to meet Grandad. The wind
felt colder than usual.
“Why so glum, mate? Where’s the sunshine gone? I
thought you’d be excited to be going to Queensland
to live: making new friends, seeing new places, trying
out new things.”
‘Not Grandad too!’ thought Damian. ‘I don’t need any
more cheering up or good advice.’
“I’ve got friends here, Grandad. I don’t know any of
the kids up there, and they wouldn’t be as good as
the ones I have down here, anyway.” Damian slammed
the car door and scrunched down in his seat. “They
play Rugby up there. I don’t know how to play Rugby.”
Granddad started the car’s engine. Then he stopped
it again. He scratched his head and thought a bit.
“Well I don’t know about that. All I know is; something
like this happened to me when I was about your age.
I didn’t die of boredom or loneliness. I thought I
would, but I found a way somehow; to make friends,
I mean.”

Grandad moved his cap back on his head and thought
a bit more, trying to remember how he found a way
to make friends in a new place.
Damian was silent. He had a lot of time for
Grandad; he was fond of him, so he didn’t want
to be rude. The silence went on for a bit, then at
last Damian sighed and asked “What DID you do,
Grandad?”
“Mmm, Well--- .” Grandad was thinking hard. “There
were the Cane Toad Races for one thing.”
Damian couldn’t believe what Grandad was saying.
“Cane Toad Races! What’s that? How could that be
as good as playing football?”
But Grandad did not allow Damian to interrupt him.
He was on a roll. “I thought you were more interested
in making new friends? And I’m saying that you can
make new friends in many ways. I’m saying you can
enjoy learning new things; any new things. It doesn’t
have to be football... sorry, Rugby.” Was Damian
listening?

“Well I didn’t understand that myself, then. When
I heard about the Cane Toad Races, I had to find
out.” Yes, he seemed to be listening.
“You see there was a lot involved in finding the right
toad, selecting and catching the right one; where to
look for a start. Then there was the training. I had
no idea of how to train a cane toad to win a race; what
the aim was, what the rules were. How to head it in
the right direction and keep it heading towards the
winning line,—and all that stuff. I asked one of the
boys at my new school. He had some pet toads and
hoped to eventually be the owner of the Champion
Cane Toad.”
“The toad he was training for the honour was a
whopper! The ugliest thing you could ever see, and
he loved it...talked to it and everything. He belonged
to a group that raced their toads on Saturdays. They
practiced after school during the week. He promised
to teach me what I needed to know and to introduce
me into the club.”
“He came with me into the bush to find the right toad.
He taught me a lot and we became best friends....and
I soon made more friends in the Cane Toad Club.”

KIDS
“And guess what? They gave me tips about Rugby, too.
And did you know that the Queensland Rugby Team,
the Maroons, has the Cane Toad as it’s mascot?”
Grandad slyly eyed Damian to see if the mention
of Rugby and its mascot was having any effect on
him. He was listening politely; only because Grandad
sometimes said something worth hearing, but he
wasn’t too sure about the Cane Toads.
Grandad reached across, put his arm around Damian’s
shoulders, and shook him gently.
“You’ll be right mate. A champion footy player like you
can succeed at anything. Making new friends...even
learning to play Rugby... if absolutely necessary.”
He started the engine, put the car into gear and
winked at Damian. Did the boy seem to be a little
less glum? Stunned perhaps, he thought, and deep in
thought.
‘Ah.’ Grandad sighed. ‘He’ll find a way. There is always
more than one solution.’
