KIDS
Sudoku is a fun activity for people of all ages. This game
was originally designed by Howard Garns. The Sudoku
game is played on a 9x9 grid which is subdivided into
nine 3x3 mini-grids. I n order to reduce its complexity
for young children, the game in this book is simplified
into a 4x4 grid and it is further divided into four 2x2
mini-grids. Besides this, pictures are used to replace
numbers, which means it will be more fun for them to
learn.
The puzzle is set with a partially-filled grid as shown
in the top picture on the left page (Figure I). The aim
of the activity is to enter the four different pictures into
the remaining grid cells so that each picture appears in
each mini-grid, column and row (Figure 2, 3 and 4). In
this workbook, children will be taught, step by step, how
to fill the empty pictures to solve the Sudoku puzzle.

Cycles (the nitrogen cycle and overuse of fertilizers)
and Climate Change (evidence and impacts of
a changing world).
We are looking for articles to draw attention to
environmental work at a local level and would also
welcome articles on other ecological topics.

I pulled the blanket over my head, but the thin veil didn’t
shield me from the light. I looked at my alarm clock; it
was almost midnight. Why couldn’t I fall asleep? I had
been tossing and turning for at least three hours.
Suddenly, a dark shadow moved across the hallway.
It was probably Jakers, my noisy pet Labrador. How I
wished I had closed my bedroom door before going to
bed, then maybe, just maybe, I could have slept through
the night.
I tried fluffing out my pillow and adjusting my blanket, but
that’s when the unusual sound started. I heard moaning…
followed by a loud bang!
“Jakers,” I whispered, “Is that you boy?”
No response. No sound of his toenails clipping against
the ceramic tiles, scampering towards my room.
“Jakers!” I hissed.
No response, yet again.
The moaning started again, this time much louder. It
couldn’t be Jakers, my dog whimpered when he was
upset. This noise sounded like it was coming from a
person.
My mind started racing. Who was in the house? Was my
family safe? What were they after?

I crept towards my bedroom door and tried to take a
peek down the hallway, but there was no one in sight. I
looked around my room, hoping I could find some sort of
weapon. I grabbed my cricket bat and tip-toed down the
corridor.
I walked past the bathroom, when suddenly… the door
closed behind me! I jumped back in fright. “Mum, Dad,
Grandpa, is that you?” I whispered, putting my ear on the
door.
No response, once again.
It had to be an intruder! I had scared whoever was in the
house and now they were trapped in the bathroom. Why
else wouldn’t they reply?
Slowly, I turned the bathroom door handle and pushed
gently, but the door slammed against my body. I could
feel a sharp pain running down my right shoulder. It didn’t
stop me; battered and bruised, I threw myself against
the door, like a warrior going into battle.
The door flung open as my cricket bat flew through the air.
“Oww!” shrieked a voice in pain.
I sprang to my feet and saw Grandpa cowering over the
toilet...
“I stubbed my toe walking into the bathroom and now
you’ve hit me on the head,” he cried.

OUTBACK
THE
AUSTRALIA
TIMES
®
This magazine is intending to reflect the unique
character of the everyday people of Australia's vast
outback country.
It will present the stories, verses, humour, photography
and art of those who have lived there in the past,
or who live there now: lives often reflecting extreme
isolation in a sometimes temperamental landscape,
tales of survival and tragedy, every aspect of life in a
land that was old when man himself was young. Its
pages will also preserve the thoughts and aspirations,
of men and women who desire to acquaint themselves
with the beauties and terrors of that ancient, whispering
country that is the essential substance of Australia's
true spirit, far beyond sight of the coastal cities, towns
and settlements where the majority of the population
congregate.
Our pages will not only carry the experiences of
successful entrepreneurs, but also the vision of
ordinary adventurers, the battlers and victims, including
those who left their dreams and bones in waterless
deserts and sleep for ever beneath the sands, safe
from the swirling, flaring bushfires, the blinding dust
storms and the floods that wash away droughts.
