Billy ran all the way home from school. He was hungry
and wanted his tea. He also wanted to see Kitty. She
was his birthday present from Mummy and Daddy.

Billy opened the front door and rushed in. “Kitty,
Kitty,” he called. She wasn’t in the hallway.

Maybe Kitty was having some milk in the kitchen. Billy
went into the kitchen. “Kitty, Kitty,” he called. Kitty
wasn’t in the kitchen. Where, oh where was Kitty?

“Purrrr.” Billy climbed up a chair and peeped into the wash
basket. There, in the middle of all Mummy’s clean, dry washing
was Kitty. Her tail poked out from one end and a pair of sleepy
eyes blinked at him from under his favourite blue pants.

“Billy, Billy,” called Mummy. “There you are! And
there is Kitty!” she laughed. “There is some warm
milk waiting for her in the kitchen.”

Jill’s hand shook as she replaced the phone’s
receiver. “What a Day!” She still couldn’t believe
it. She plopped herself down in her comfy chair,
wrapping her icy hands around the warm cup of
coffee she had prepared before the phone rang.
It’s warmth relaxed her and she began to think
over the day.

It had begun on a happy note as she began
counting the money she had just collected from
the office. “$100, $200, $300, $400, $450.
Ah! Enough for one week in the holiday house
at the beach. And I deserve every penny of
it,” she told herself, “all those stinking hot days
tramping around on burning pavements delivering
pamphlets.” Her reward was staring her in the
face
with a smile. She could keep her promise to
the children, to spend a week, right at the beach,
during the school holidays. Jill packed the notes
back into the brown paper bag, carefully tucking
it into the shopping trolley, out of sight under her
shopping bags, and left the coffee shop. She
had been unaware of some curious stares as she
counted the cash and dreamed of her children’s
faces when she told them the news.

On her way to the supermarket to finish her
shopping, Jill passed the Pet Shop. She paused
for a few moments to gaze at a pair of puppies
playing happily in the window space. She
remembered that her next project, was to save
enough money to buy a puppy for the children.
They had been so patient; understanding when
she explained that ‘that money doesn’t grow on
trees’, it takes time to save up. The pup was
another happy thought, spoiled a little knowing
it would mean more tramping around hot streets
delivering pamphlets to earn money to buy one.
“Ah well, the weather will be cooler soon.”

Her shopping finished, Jill checked her watch. The
children would be home from school early today, the
last day of term before Easter. She could hardly wait
to tell them the good news. Now to unload her trolley
and pack everything into her car. With the shopping
stowed in the boot, Jill stared in disbelief at the
empty trolley. “No
-
o
-
o” she almost screamed, and
would have if the shock hadn’t knocked the breath
out of her. “The money. It couldn’t have gone.” She
made another frantic search, uselessly. It was gone!.
An elderly lady came over to see the fuss. “What’s
wrong love?” Jill shakily explained. “Ah! Look love,
they tell you all the time to watch your shopping
trolley. People pinch things. Go and report it now. But...,
Good luck.” Jill’s heart sank, but she reported her
loss anyway. The Security people were sympathetic
but didn’t hold out much hope.
Back at home with a heart empty of the happiness
she had anticipated, Jill unpacked her shopping.
All she could think of was ‘How can I pay for the
holiday house? The agent is expecting the money on
Monday.’ Finding no answer, her next question filled
her thoughts. ‘How do I tell the children?’

Still no answer came to her. ‘I need a good, strong, hot
cup of coffee.’ and like an automaton, she added an
extra spoonful of sugar, just as the phone rang. Hoping
against hope, Jill lifted the receiver. “Hello?” She was
hoping it might be Security, saying they had located her
money. No such luck! “That you Jill? Mavis here.”
Jill’s
good friend of many years.
“I’m phoning from my
house at Phillip Island to ask you a favour.” Jill wasn’t
in the mood at the moment, and she hoped that didn’t
come through in her voice. “Yes Mavis. What is it?”
“I know it’s a bit of a cheek, but I’ve been called
away unexpectedly and haven’t had time to make
the proper arrangements for minding Bessie.”... “Oh?”
Jill’s voice sounded dull. “Well,” Mavis went on, “Do
you remember saying you would mind my dog Bess,
if I ever needed your help? Well, it’s a long story.
Bessie delivered four puppies at the weekend and I’ll
be away for a week. Could you see your way clear
to come down, stay in my beachhouse and look after
Bessie and the pups? I’d be so grateful. Bring the
children. I know they love Bessie
---
and being at the
beach. They could choose one of the puppies to
keep
--
as a reward for helping to take care of them.”

Jill drew a long sip of her coffee and they finalized
the arrangements. She plopped down in her chair
with the remains of her coffee and just then she
heard her children’s voices as they came running
up the driveway. She couldn’t wait to tell them
the news. “What a day it had been.”
