The Sandy Beach Illustration, Belier, http://openclipart.org
The smell of the sea is pulling me back
To sights and sounds gone by.
I hear seagulls cry at their 'chattering' play,
Watch them quarrel and swoop from the sky.
I see the heave and roll of sun-filled waves
As they rush to shatter on the land,
Spraying tiny diamonds of light in the air
Before sinking back into the sand.
I feel the cool froth as I walk on the edge
And the sand squeezes up through my toes.
I fancy my heart beats in time once more
With the sea's restless rhythm, as it ebbs and flows.
I feel the warm kiss of the sun on my face
As the sea breezes play in my hair.
But I'm rudely awakened by the traffic's crude roar
I swear I will soon go back there.

“I think it is time we told the children,”
Mummy said to Daddy.
Mummy was smiling.
“Yes, I think it is time to tell the children,”
answered Daddy.
Daddy was smiling.
“I’ll call them, shall I?” asked Daddy.
“That would be lovely,” answered Mummy.
Mummy and Daddy were both smiling.
What was Mummy and Daddy’s big
secret?
Shhhh, don’t tell Alice.
Shhhh, don’t tell Rose
Shhhh, don’t tell Winston.

“Alice, can you come here please,” called
Daddy.
“Coming Daddy,” answered Alice.
“Rose, can you come here as well, please,”
called Daddy.
“Yes Daddy,” replied Rose.
“Winston, can you come here please,”
called Daddy.
There was no answer.
“Winston, where are you?” asked Daddy. He
called a little louder so Winston could hear him.
There was no answer.
Oh no, where was Winston?
Alice came into the room.
Rose came into the room.
Winston did not come into the room.

The letter lay open on the kitchen table. It was the first thing
Amy saw when she walked into the room. She had dropped
her homework and had run to see why her mother was cry-
ing. Amy thought her mother must have cut herself badly...
or something worse. She wasn’t one to make a big fuss about
anything, not even when her father had given them the news
that he was going to Queensland for a year to work at one
of the big coal gas mines and the oil rigs.
Things had not been good for the family in the months be-
fore he left. The factory her Dad worked at had closed
its doors with very little warning. Though he searched day
after day, he found no other place that had a vacancy for a
diesel mechanic. A dark cloud had begun to hang over their
once happy home. Occasionally Amy would hear sharp, snap-
py voices from her parents’ room. Soon it was happening
regularly.
One night, when Dad arrived home, she heard laughter from
the kitchen and ran out to see what it was all about. Mum
had grabbed her in a big bear-hug and waltzed her around
the kitchen.
“Your Dad has found a job. Wow. Are we going to live it up
tonight!”
“Hang on... hang on just a minute.” Dad had butted in, “You
haven’t heard it all yet.”

Her mother let Amy go and was ‘all ears’ to hear the rest of
what he had to say.
“You mightn’t like the next bit. The job is in Queensland. I
can’t take you with me just yet. I won’t get any leave in the
first year... not any long enough to come back to Melbourne.
After the first year, they’ll tell me if they’ll keep me on.”
Faces dropped. Then Amy and her mother were silent. When
her mother spoke again, her voice had lost its happy sparkle.
“Well it’s good that you’ve found work at last, love. You’ve
tried so hard.” Mum held back a sob. “I’ll hate it with-
out you, but don’t worry; Amy and I will look after each
other.”
A week later he was gone, leaving a surprise for each of
them on the kitchen table. For Amy it was the set of drums
she had dreamed of for so long.
He had kept in touch occasionally, but he found it difficult
to write. Now here was this letter, and her mother in tears.
“What is it Mum? Has something happened to Dad?”
“No love, you’d better read it and tell me what you think.”
Amy read it out aloud to the sound of her mother’s occa-
sional ‘snuffle’.

“Hi, my two best girls,
At last I have some real news. My ‘conditional’ year is
nearly over and the mining company wants to keep me on
if I’m happy to stay. They will help me with accommoda-
tion. There are some quite nice houses in the town, to
rent or to buy. Also, many of the miners’ families have
holiday places down on the coast at Yeppoon. They enjoy
the beach and all sorts of water sports after months in
the hot, dry country around the mining town. The pay at
the mine is enough to afford that. I have a month’s leave
and plenty to tell you. I’ll come home and we can talk it
over and decide what to do.
Can’t wait to see you both again and give you a big hug.
Love,
Dad.”
Amy’s Mum gave a convulsive gulp and blew her nose. They
couldn’t speak to each other... they couldn’t speak because
they didn’t know what to say.
It was a different story when Dad arrived home; everyone
spoke at once. Questions and information fired back and
forth as if on the hottest battlefield... except that it was
friendly fire. When Yeppoon was mentioned, and the possibil-
ity of a holiday home ‘of their own’ there, Mum was ecstat-
ic. The beach and the sea had been her longed-for dream.
As they talked, Amy began to have visions of sail-boarding,
skimming through the water; of doing a morning run along

the sands. It would be worth the wait in the heat of the
mining town between holiday breaks. The discussion paused
to allow thinking time and a coffee break, and Dad changed
the subject.
“How’s your band going? Still playing your drums?”
“We’ve broken up, Dad. Too much study...final year, remember...
exams coming up, then we’ll all be going our different ways.”
“Well now, that’s a shame. But here’s something to think
about. If you and Mum decide to come up to Queensland and
live at the mining town, the big pub there has been crying
out for a decent drummer. The local band is trying to get or-
ganised because it’s the main form of entertainment there,
that and rugby… and it might be worth checking at the local
school to see if they need a music teacher... since music has
been your main subject....”
The discussion went on, shifting to consider what there
would be to interest Mum, until the sky outside began to
grow light. Dad stood, stretched and spoke one last word...
several in fact.
“To bed, to bed. Think about things and we’ll talk some more
tomorrow. By Monday I must let the boss know our decision.”
Before hopping into bed, Amy checked on her drums and
gave them an affectionate pat. “I have a feeling we’ll be
hard at work again soon,” she whispered.
