Do you ever see a skateboard park
And watch the skaters there?
Do you ‘cluck’ and sigh at such waste of time
And pass with your nose in the air?
Or have you paused to watch awhile
At them spinning in the air,
As they dip and sway, and twist and spin
With the air rushing through their hair?
If one goes down, if he scrapes a knee,
That’s just part of the game.
He’s up again to fly, or fall,
To him it’s all the same.
They never seem to tire of it,
They could keep it up all day
And wouldn’t even notice me
As I pass along their way.

“It’s just a check-up today, Damian. I don’t know what all
the fuss is about.”
Damian was giving his teeth an extra good scrub. He didn’t
want the dentist telling his mother that he didn’t clean them
properly. He looked in the mirror and gave himself a big
smile. Good. Shiny and bright, just a bit crooked, that’s all.
He just wished the kids at school wouldn’t go on about it.
By the time his mother had parked the car outside the
dentist’s rooms, Damian was feeling a bit nervous. One of
the boys at school had told him about the problems of having
bands put on your teeth, and he had ‘laid it on thick’, making
it sound like something Damian never wanted to experience.
He didn’t tell those stories to his mother; she would just
say, “Kids are like that Damian, Don’t take any notice.” She
didn’t always understand.
Once securely seated in the dentist’s chair with a paper bib
fastened around his neck... the nurse was really sweet... Dr.
Dan came in to say ‘Hello’. He was a happy soul, and said
all the nicest things about how well Damian had taken care
of his teeth. That didn’t really help. Damian felt sure he
knew what was coming. He had overheard his parents talking
about ‘having Damian’s teeth straightened’, and about how
expensive that would be.

“Well, have you talked it over and come to a decision?” Dr. Dan
asked Damian’s Mum.
His mother nodded. “Yes,” she said, “but the final decision is
Damian’s.”
“O.K. I’ll explain the whole process to your son and he can
tell me what he wants done. He has a beautiful set of strong,
healthy teeth. It would be a shame not to have them perfectly
straight... like some film star... and that would help to keep
them healthy too.” And on went the dentist, describing to
Damian all the gory details: except that they didn’t sound
‘gory’ after all; more like a mechanic or an artist, building a
luxury Maserati or Porsche.
He finished up assuring Damian that the first stage, fitting
what he called a ‘cage’, would give him an idea of how the bands
might feel, and would help his mouth to become ready for them
to be put on. “You’ll be a real glamour boy by the time we’ve
finished, now what do you say? Are you ready to give it a go,
or do you want to go home and think about it?”
Damian had been thinking about it for a week, now, and he
didn’t want to think about it anymore. What he hated most
of all was to be thought a ‘funk’ or ‘fraidy-cat’. All the kids
at school would know if he “chickened out’.

“O’K’, I’ll give it a go,” murmured Damian, feeling like
some hero from a movie, about to enter a torture
chamber.
“Wonderful,” said Dr. Dan. “I’ll take some measurements
today and get the nurse to make an appointment for next
week for a trial fitting of the ‘cage’.”
‘Next week’ sounded like five minutes away, too close, but at
any rate, he was getting out of there today in one piece.
Then he had a thought.
“Could I have it done at the end of term? Then I’d have the
school holidays to get used to them.”
“Great idea,” Dr. Dan agreed. “It will take until then to get
everything set up, but I’ll still need to see you next week to
get things started.”
Damian was slightly relieved, but still felt so anxious that
he jumped down from chair with the bib still fastened
around his neck. That sweet nurse was so nice; she
expertly snatched the bib off Damian as he passed her
without anyone noticing. It wasn’t such a bad place with
her there.

As the final weeks of term passed, Damian managed to put
aside the thought of the coming visit to the dentist. He had
begun to understand this game of rugby that they played in
Queensland, even though he missed playing Australian Rules
football, and the team he had belonged to in Victoria. He
found he quite liked rugby.
His new love, surfing, filled most of his thoughts, and Jasmine
filled the rest. The measurements had been taken and the
cage would be fitted on the last day of term. He could forget
it for now.
Jasmine was a popular girl at his new school in Queensland.
He sometimes sat next to her in English and Maths Classes.
Lately, she seemed to have something worrying her, but
she was always happy and pleasant, and she was a ‘looker’,
too; beautiful, with a lovely smile, though she had the same
problem as Damian. But he didn’t think that her teeth being
crooked spoiled her looks. Not one little bit.
The holidays came, the cage was fitted and Damian was
getting used to any discomfort it caused. He had become
accustomed to eating and talking with that ‘thing’ in his
mouth and soon felt just like the old Damian. He could even
forget it was in his mouth when catching a wave and riding it

triumphantly to the shallows. Not like their poor old surfing
coach, Mr. Broadman, who lost his false teeth in the waves
last week, when demonstrating how to ride a ‘curly’ wave.
Came the day for the bands to be fitted. The cage had done
its job. The fitting hadn’t been too bad; that sweet nurse
was there. She always made Damian feel better. A few days
left to get used to the feel of them before the new term
began. He was feeling a little uncertain of how the kids would
act towards him. Would they tease him? Would they still
want him to be part of their group? He then saw Jasmine.
She was all alone and looking miserable. A bit like he felt.
Though he felt self-conscious of showing his new ‘bands’y’
smile, Damian went over and sat on the rock wall beside her.
He took the chance and smiled at her anyway.
“Gooday Jasmine. How were the holidays?”
She looked up and smiled at his friendliness. That was when
he understood why she had been sitting by herself. Believe
it or not, her smile was the same as his was now. He was so
glad that he had taken the chance and smiled at her.
“I hope mine look as good on me, as yours do on you,” he said.
