I am a little grass seed,
Buffalo is my name.
Snug and warm beneath the earth,
I’ve waited for the rain.
Through sunny days and hot, dry winds,
I’ve prayed for it in vain.
But now I sense dark thunder clouds,
I’ll feel their gift again.
The hard, hot earth around me
Will soften and ease my pain.
And here it comes, it soaks the ground,
I’m feeling all alive.
My dry old pod splits open,
My green shoots start to thrive.
I’m taking root and spreading out,
I need a lot more space.
Other seeds are shooting up,
And joining in the race.
I look around at the once dry ground,
And all is lush and green.
It’s many rain-starved months now,
Since such a sight was seen.
Wait! What is that I hear now,
Roaring across the lawn?
It’s cutting down my sweet green blades,
That grew once I was born.

Once upon a time there was a grandmother, called Mocco who
loved cats. One day, a small grey kitten came to live with her. She
called it MISS APPLEBEE. As grandma Mocco was a writer, she
invented stories of the adventures of MISS APPLEBEE for her
grandchildren.
MISS APPLEBEE grew up and is now 2 years old. She is a British
Shorthair and a most loving cat but she also rules the house. At
night she sleeps on the foot end of grandma Mocco’s bed and
she loves treats. If grandma Mocco would not know for sure that
MISS APPLEBEE is a cat, she would think that she was a human.
Mocco Wollert is a poet with 7 published books to her name. Her
8 MISS APPLEBEE stories are her first step into writing children’s
stories. She lives with her husband and MISS APPLEBEE in
Brisbane, Australia.

A Lucky Find
More Than One Solution:
Written by Barbara Scott
51
It was term holidays and Jill’s family were off to stay at the
beach. Kate and Jeremy had the job of getting Bob ready for
the drive down to Phillip Island. They were always entrusted
with looking after their younger brother now. Kate would be
eleven after Easter. Jeremy had turned nine before Easter,
because Easter was late this year. Kate sometimes despaired
of remembering when their birthdays were due, with Easter
shifting about all over the place.
Never mind; at least they could remember Bob’s because
his birthday was always on Christmas Eve. He was a bit too
young to enjoy celebrating his first two birthdays, but he
was enjoying them more now he was getting older. He turned
five last Christmas, and was fun to play with... sometimes! At
other times he was a heavy responsibility, and didn’t like being
bossed around by his brother and sister. Bob was often in their
care because their mother went to work. But now; yippee... it
was holidays and they were off to the beach for two weeks.
Freeeeedom!
Not all the time... they still needed to keep an eye on Bob in
case he became too adventuresome in the sea, but Mum always
came down to the beach with them. And there was Bessie
and her four puppies to care for too. Kate and Jeremy didn’t
mind that: they loved taking care of this ‘dog’ family. Mum’s
friend had told them they could choose one of the puppies
for themselves when they were weaned, as a ‘thank you’ for
minding them while she was away.

One day, after breakfast, Mum had said, “Who wants to see
the Little Penguins?”
No-one said ‘No’. Why would they? This was something they
had been looking forward to.
So after seeing the puppies were safe for the rest of the day,
and a picnic tea had been packed, they were ready to go.
“Did you bring your jackets?” asked Mum. “It can be quite cool
after sundown, when the penguins come in from the sea. And
we might need some blankets to sit on.”
Kate and Jeremy nodded, but Mum had her eyes on the
road. “What’s that?” she asked. “Yes, Mum,” the children
chorused.
They spent a little time on the beach before going to buy
their tickets for the Penguin Parade and taking a look at the
museum. The display gave the children an idea of what life was
like for Little Penguins; the smallest penguins in the world, only
33cms tall. It wasn’t without danger. Sharks for one thing;
dogs, cats and foxes will kill penguins too... and so do humans;
people who after eating their lunch, quite thoughtlessly throw
their plastic wrappers and bags into the sea. Kate and Jeremy
wondered how plastic bags could kill penguins. They wanted
to find out, wondering about this as they walked down to the
boardwalk at the beach.

They settled themselves on the concrete steps where they
would get a good view of the penguins as they came in from
the sea. Mum was right. They needed the blankets and their
jackets once the sun went down.
People were getting excited. They wondered how long it would
be until they saw the first penguin. The beach was lit only
enough to see the sand and the water’s edge... and the penguins,
once they decided to waddle ashore.
“There’s one,” someone yelled.
“I see one too.”
“Shhh, don’t frighten them.”
“Look. Over there. Three of them.”
Excitement ran through the crowd, then, a disappointed sigh.
“Oooh. They’ve gone back in the water again.”
But soon more penguins ventured out of the water; looked
around and waited a bit. Then they must have decided it was
safe. A few at a time, they began waddling across the beach and
up over the sand dunes, looking for their chicks. Their bellies
were full of fish they had caught at sea and they wanted to
find their own warm burrow and feed their babies with their
regurgitated fish.

After watching the penguins find their own chicks and feed
them, Jill announced it was time for her human family to do
the same. They would go home, have some supper, check on
the pups and get some sleep.
Next morning at breakfast on the deck, Jeremy gave them
all a little shock. He held up a plastic bag full of money, then,
triumphantly, emptied a heap of notes and coins on the table.
“Look what I found. We can go and see the seals tomorrow
with this. I found it in the sand at the Penguin Parade. It was
dark and I couldn’t see who dropped it.”
The faces around the table were frozen. They didn’t know
what to think or say. They were wondering what they should
do and finding it hard to decide. Keep it? Spend it? Try to find
the owner? How would that be possible?
Jill was quiet. She was remembering how she felt when someone
had stolen her money; money she had worked so hard for. She
had saved it to take the children for a holiday at the beach and
all her happy dreams had suddenly crashed out of existence.
If it hadn’t been for her friend lending them her beach house,
she would have had to tell the children there was no holiday.
Jill hadn’t told the children about that, and now, she decided,
was the time. They listened. Jeremy didn’t know what to say.
He had been thinking the money should be his. He had found it,
and he had offered to share it; to spend it on an outing for the

whole family. After all, some-one had taken their money, why
shouldn’t they be able to have this to spend - see the seals…
and….
No one spoke for a while, each thinking his own thoughts. Then
Mum broke the silence. “I wonder who lost this money. I wonder
what they wanted... or needed it for. I wonder how they’ll feel
now. It isn’t our money.”
She touched the plastic bag, then pushed it and the money
aside.
“I wonder how the person who has kept my money feels about
himself. If you like, we could take this back to the Penguin place
now and hand it in to Lost and Found. Maybe it will be a happy
ending for someone just like us.”
Mum looked at Jeremy. Everyone at the table did. He was
their brother and they loved him. It was very quiet for a few
moments. Then Jeremy looked around at his family. “Thank you,
Mum. Yes. I’d like to take it back today,” he almost whispered.
“The owner might be back there looking for it. They’ll be glad
to have it returned.”
They all piled into the car and back they went to the Penguin
place. They told their story to the man at the ticket box and
he phoned the lady who looked after the “Lost and Found”. She
told him to send the family down to see her at the Penguin
Hospital.

This was exciting. They would see, ‘up close’, the penguins that
needed some special care.
A lady in a white coat was nursing a small penguin and feeding it
from a tiny tube; just like a tiny eye dropper that humans use.
“I believe you have brought the money you found last night.
That is so good. The poor man who lost it was so upset. He didn’t
know what he was going to do. He’ll be so relieved.”
She noticed the curiosity on the children’s faces as they
looked around. “Would you like to have a ‘conducted tour’ of our
Penguin Hospital? I’ll tell you all about the things we do here.”
She turned to Jeremy. “You might like to nurse this one. Wrap
this small blanket around him; penguin chicks need to be kept
warm before they drink. Here... be very careful with him, don’t
hold him too tightly or he won’t be able to breathe. They have
a different way of breathing than we do.”
No-one wanted to leave, but at last they had to go. The penguins
needed to be fed and to rest.
On the way back from the Penguin place, feeling pretty good
with themselves, they stopped for a treat at the ice cream
parlour to celebrate Jeremy’s decision and the wonderful end
to the day.
