A Letter to Addy….
By Mocco Wollert
My
darling Addy,
Miss Applebee has a new friend. It is a little Jack Russel dog and
her name is Pippa. Pippa’s mother, who is called Barbara, walks her every
day. They often walk past our house.
We did not think that Pippa and Miss Applebee would get on together but
when Barbara brought Pippa into our house, the two animals were very
friendly towards each other.
Now, Miss Applebee often sits at the door in the late afternoon. She is
waiting for Pippa to come. When Pippa comes, Miss Applebee kisses her and
rubs herself all over that little dog.
They both like 'treats’. I keep a jar of treats for dogs but Miss Applebee
loves them too. So, when I call: 'treats, treats,’ they both come running
and sit in my kitchen waiting. They know the rattle of the treat tin very well.
They are very well behaved and do not try and steal each other’s 'treats.’
Today I am sending you a million kisses.

nce upon a time there was a grandmother, called Mocco who loved
cats. One day, a small grey kitten came to live with her. She called it
MISS APPLEBEE. As grandma Mocco was a writer, she invented stories of
the adventures of MISS APPLEBEE for her grandchildren.
MISS APPLEBEE grew up and is now 2 years old. She is a British Shorthair
and a most loving cat but she also rules the house. Atnight she sleeps on the
foot end of grandma Moccos bed and she loves treats. If grandma Mocco
would not know for sure that MISS APPLEBEE is a cat, she would think that
she was a human.
Mocco Wollert is a poet with 7 published books to her name. Her 8 MISS
APPLEBEE stories are her rst step into writing childrens stories. She lives
with her husband and MISS APPLEBEE in Brisbane, Australia.
MOCCO WOLLERT is currently looking for a publisher with distribution Australia wide for her 8 Miss
Applebee adorable stories. She would like to see thousands of grandmothers who do not have computers
reading Miss Applebee stories to their grandchildren. Mocco has also tested the Miss Applebee stories in
Prep Schools, Kindergartens, grade 1 and 2 with great success. They would make great ‘First Readers’ in
schools. Children are a very critical audience and they judge honestly without holding back; Miss Applebee
passed the grade, the children liked the simple rhymes either to read or to sing. As there are 8 stories they
would make a great ‘boxed set’, particularly in hardcover. Please feel free to drop her an email at mocco.
wollert@bigpond.com if you are interested in publishing Miss Applebee stories.

Green Kitty and Baxter the Bear sat on Miss Ellie’s
bed. Miss Ellie, who was four going on five, was
looking at a picture book of funny animals. It was two
days before Christmas and everyone was excited –
very excited.
A robin flew down and sat on the windowsill. “Good
morning Miss Ellie, good morning Green Kitty and
good morning Baxter,” chirped the robin.
“How do you do, Robin Redbreast,” replied Miss Ellie,
who was very polite to birds. “It’s nearly Christmas,
isn’t that exciting?”
“It is indeed,” said Robin. “Please thank your Mommy
for those nice scraps she left for my friends and me –
they’re very welcome, especially when it snows.”
“You are most welcome,” said Miss Ellie. “But, why
do you look so sad.”
“I’m a bit lonely, you see, all my friends have flown
south for the winter.”
“Oh
! Where have they gone?” said Miss Ellie, who
at four going on five, was most curious about these
matters.
“They’ve all gone south to the sunshine. My friends
Simon and Stella Swallow said they won’t be back
until April.”

Just then, a sparrow flew down, hopped onto the
windowsill, and whispered to Robin.
Miss Ellie frowned – which we all know is an upside
down smile. “It’s very rude to whisper in company,”
she said sternly, as only a young lady of four going
on five can do.
“I’m sorry,” said Spencer Sparrow, for that’s what
he was. “I’ve just heard that Santa’s reindeer are
sick. You see they ate too much green grasses and
are feeling poorly. Christmas Day is two days away.
Can you help, Miss Ellie? ”
“I know,” chirped Robin. “I’ll talk to Professor Oswald
Owl, who lives near the barn. He’s very wise; he’ll
know what to do.”

Having said that, he flew away towards the barn.
“Hang on there,” called Spencer Sparrow. “I’m
coming with you.”
Robin knocked at Oswald’s door. “Professor Oswald,
would you spare me a minute please, I have a
question to ask you.” Birds, as you know, are very,
very polite to each other.
“Of course young Robin, I see you’ve brought young
Spencer, do come in and what seems to be the
trouble?” replied Professor Oswald.
“Well, you see,” said Robin. “Santa’s reindeers are ill
and Christmas is only a few days away. Our friend
Miss Ellie, who is four going on five, wants to help.”
Professor Oswald, thought for a moment then
scratched his head. “I think I can help here. You see,
Santa has to go the other side of the world first.
Then he comes here to us, when it’s daylight there.
You understand young Robin?”
“Of course, Professor Owl, I’ll get going right away.
I’ve got some friends who can help. Thank you,
Professor.”
“Glad to help young Robin and Spencer, please give
my best to Miss Ellie.”

So! Robin asked Spencer Sparrow to tell Stan
Seagull. Stan Seagull hitched a ride on the tail of a
big airplane. Three quarters of the way over the
sea, Stan flew off and told the porpoise, Santa’s
reindeer were sick and Miss Ellie needed help.
The porpoise, quick as a flash told the shark,
who told the crocodile
who told the platypus
who told the kookaburra
who told the magpie.
who told the cockatoo
who told the koala
…and it got to Kenny Kangaroo.

“Easy peasy fellers,” said Kenny Kangaroo. “I’ll talk to
my six big white friends The Boomer Brothers, and
they’ll pull Santa’s Sleigh.”
“What about it fellas,” said Kenny Kangaroo to his
friends. “Can we help Santa get the presents to
the girls and boys by Christmas Day? Our friends in
America, Miss Ellie, who is four going on five, Green
Kitty and Baxter the Bear, need all our help.”
“Too right mate,” said the biggest of the boomers as
he munched a vegemite cracker. “No worries. Let’s go
you jokers.” Which as anyone knows is the Australian
way of saying. “Okay guys, let’s pull sleigh.”
So the koala told the cockatoo
who told the magpie
who told the kookaburra
who told the platypus
who told the crocodile
who told the shark
who told the porpoise
who told the first available seagull going to the North
who told the Spencer Sparrow and Robin Redbreast
who told Green Kitty and Baxter the Bear
… and finally it got to Miss Ellie.

Miss Ellie, four going on five, left a big glass of cold
milk for Santa and asked mommy to bake some
biscuits for the six ‘you- know-who’.
Santa, with the help of the boomer brothers was
able to deliver all of their presents.
Early on Christmas morning Ellie found that Santa
had been there. Mommy and Daddy were near the
tree. Very, very puzzled.
“Strange,” said Mommy. “Daddy and I heard this
‘boing-boing-boing’ last night.”
“Just like a jumping kangaroo we see on television,”
said Daddy.
“Look,” said Mommy. “Someone left this tiny jar of
vegemite…hhmmmm, very strange.”
Miss Ellie winked at Baxter the Bear and Green Kitty.
You see, only they knew the secret.
But we know, they all had a happy Christmas.

Some time ago there was a story going around about
a young boy who had just come home from church.
He seemed quite puzzled and asked his mother who
Gladly was. His mother was equally puzzled and
asked him to explain.
“Well,” he said, “In church today, we were singing a
song to Gladly, the cross-eyed bear. Who is he?”
You and I might remember that this was a line from
a hymn, “Gladly the cross I’d bear.” Nevertheless,
a new story began to grow in my head out of that
old one, so I have written it down, hoping it might be
useful to someone.

I must have met Gladly and his brother, Sadly, from
time to time when I was a child, but I would soon lose
sight of them and forget.
When I was a young teenager, I met Sadly for the
first time I can really remember. He wasn’t a very
nice bear, he tried to hang around me all the time
and make me feel bad.
One day, my father explained to me that Sadly
wasn’t my bear at all, he really belonged to someone
who didn’t understand how to say “Goodbye” to
Sadly, and how to make friends with Gladly instead.
My father said Gladly could be a good friend if you
treated him the right way. He can give you many
gifts and it doesn’t have to be Christmas or your
birthday. I liked presents, so I asked “What could
Gladly give me?” The answer he gave was not what
I had expected.
My father said “He can give you the most precious
and valuable gifts you could ever have and no-one
can ever take them away from you. Even better,
if you look after them well, these gifts can keep
growing bigger and better all your life. What’s
more, you can share them with others or give them
to people who need them - yet still keep them for
yourself. Sometimes you can get some of these gifts
for yourself without waiting for Gladly.”

This sounded pretty good to me. I wanted some.
“What are these gifts?” I asked.
“UNDERSTANDING is one very good one to have.
If you can get this, you should share it. PATIENCE is
another. If you have it, most things that are good for
you will come eventually, and most things that are
bad or sad will pass. In the meantime you can find
other things to make the time pass contentedly-
and even usefully. MAGIC GLASSES, GENEROSITY,
KINDNESS and LOVE come in a package deal and
can be used together. The Glasses help you to see
another person’s needs, Generosity, Kindness and
Love help you to supply a need when you see it. You
don’t become poorer when you spend some of your
gifts this way, but, magically, you become richer.
Your stockpile of happiness becomes greater. This
is where you will need to get another very precious
gift, WISDOM. This will help you to use the other gifts
wisely so they help people instead of harming them.”
“How do I get WISDOM?” I asked.
“WISDOM comes in a 3-pack,” my father answered.
“It comes with, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE and
UNDERSTANDING. Sometimes you need to spend
some time with Gladly the cross-eyed bear and learn
from him, especially to get the gift of Experience.
Some of these gifts will cost you something, but
you can often get a discount. The gifts which come
completely free are Love and Kindness.

For several years I saw nothing more of the
cross-eyed bear brothers - at least as far as I can
remember.
My parents told me that it could be good to be a
cross-eyed bear because they could see both ways
at the same time. They could see the good things
one way and the bad or sad things the other way.
Then they could choose, or see how one way might
be able to help the other.
For many years I would try to get my own gifts
without waiting for the bears to teach me. With the
help of others, I got some of those gifts. Sometimes
I just put them in the bottom drawer (for later) and
often found I needed to use them. But my parents
were right. The more I used those gifts, especially
Experience, Learning, Patience, Love etc., the better
they became. Now I find it difficult to fit them all back
into the bottom drawer, especially Love. When I give
some away, so many people keep giving it back to
me. Not only that, but I keep getting free gifts given to
me, children, experiences, friends, people who help
me, the beautiful world full of sights and sounds, and
ideas, and knowledge - which helps enormously.

Now and again the bears come back. When I can’t
handle them by myself, someone always comes
along to help me.
Sadly usually comes around when illness or injury
comes. Sometimes he appears when you experience
loss of some kind, unkindness, hurt or injustice.
The other day, Sadly came back to me in a very nasty
mood and wouldn’t go away. Then I heard someone
say something about ‘the cross-eyed bear’ and I
remembered. Gladly would help me look for just
the right gifts from the bottom drawer which would
send Sadly on his way.
OOPS
! I nearly forgot a very important gift. You
need it when you cannot CHANGE what has
happened. It is called ACCEPTANCE, a gift which
needs to be accompanied by WISDOM. So, Goodbye
Sadly
!!!
Thank you to everyone who has helped me to treat
Gladly as my friend.
