Easter is nearly here! Whoopee! Claudia
was soooo excited!
Every year since she could remember,
Mum and Dad had lined up chocolate eggs
and chocolate bunnies all in a row on the
small sideboard by the front door. Every
time Claudia came home from school, she
would stop and count these goodies, which
somehow magically seemed to increase
every few days. This display lasted for up
to a week before Easter and no longer.
Mum knew that the children were fit to
burst by the end of the week and would
wait a day longer.

Claudia had just celebrated her fifth
birthday and this particular Easter was
going to be extra special. There was going
to be an Easter egg hunt in the garden
early on Sunday morning. Claudia had
never had this wonderful treat before
as her mother was waiting for her to be
old enough to look after her little brother
as they wandered around the very big
garden behind the house, looking for the
eggs.

On Sunday morning, Claudia held brother
Toby’s chubby little hand in one of hers
and a small basket in her other hand. Mum
made sure the garden gate was locked
and waved to them on the door step as
Claudia dragged little Toby up the garden
path and disappeared behind a bush. It
didn’t take long before Claudia found one
egg under the small bush, then another
in the flower bed, then another under
the bird bath. “Eggee” shrieked little Toby
clutching an egg far too big for his small
hand. It rolled away and brother and
sister, laughing happily, ran after it. Soon
Claudia’s little basket was nearly full of
beautiful eggs; gold eggs, multi-coloured
eggs, big eggs, small eggs, hollow eggs and
eggs with yummy centres.

Claudia and Toby went inside and obediently
placed the eggs they had found on the
sideboard. When they sat down at the kitchen
table Toby had an egg and a chocolate bunny
by his cereal bowl and Claudia found a single
large egg by the side of a cute yellow knitted
chicken.
“Gosh”, said Claudia, “It looks like the chicken
has laid the egg”.
Toby was not to be outdone. “See, bunny
wabbit has made an egg too”.
The whole family laughed.
Dad swooped down and gave both his
children a big hug and said, “Well, I’m off to
get the Sunday paper. Make sure you don’t
eat all the chocolate eggs while I am gone!”
Claudia laughed happily. Little Toby was too
busy unwrapping his ‘wabbit’ with chocolate
coated hands to wave back.

MEET THE KELLY’S
DREAM ON KELLY
KIDS STORY: AGES 10++
4747
My name is Stollery Kelly - why Stollery? Well, I was
named after my grandma, on my Mum’s side. Her
name is Mrs. Annabelle Stollery.
I’m eleven, almost 12, and in my last year of primary
school. I’m going up to high school next year. The only
problem is my sister. She’s also named Annabelle
and at the same high school as well. So I won’t be able
to have fun or fudge homework, on account of her
girlfriends dobbing me in to Annabelle and Annabelle
dobbing me into Mum and Dad.
I guess she’s okay, for a girl. And if she wasn’t my
sister, I’d say she was drop dead gorgeous - I heard
a guy say that on TV once. Annabelle sort of looks
like that redheaded lady on
McLeod’s Daughters
-
Simmone Jade someone.
My Dad, Richard, is a computer nut and works - no,
he is the manager of the local bank, here in Shelby.
Mum, that’s Lisa to her friends, she’s the local Avon
lady and reckons when she makes Area Manager
she’s going to shout us all on a trip to Movie World, in
Queensland. Dad reckons all the money had better be
in his bank, or else. Mum knows he’s joking of course,
it’s a given - heard that on TV too, unless you want to
travel into Goldtown, an hour away, ours is the only
bank around these parts.

We live in a town called Shelby, only a small place and
just three hours from Sydney. Goldtown, our nearest
large centre, is just an hour’s drive away.
It was so cool, when Shelby got a mention on
Getaway
.
Jennifer Hawkins, she was Miss Universe, came
out to do the story. Now, if she were our teacher,
we’d all be on time with our homework. Annabelle
reckons Jennifer’s all right, but she’d rather have
Tom Williams, as if. So! What’s so good about a bloke
taking off his shirt on some stupid dancing show?
Anyway, there were TV crews everywhere. They’re
a funny mob, all the girls calling each other darling
and the guys saying “maaate” all the time.
Lofty Boden reckons the show’s ratings will get a
boost. Whatever that is, on account of everyone in
Shelby and Goldtown would be watching.
The travel books say that Shelby was named after a
Napoleonic War hero, Major General Tobias Shelby,
soldier and gentleman farmer. Land was granted
to him in 1821. His family settled there a year later.
I’ve been to Shelby’s Farm and I reckon the books are
spot on; it’s a fun place.

School is ok. I guess. It’s only small and only goes up to
year six. Our home teacher is Miss Last, she’s a real
babe
- “Jug Ears” Lewis reckons she’s real gone on Mr.
Avery, the head teacher. My mate, Boxy, reckons she’s
not, because Miss Last is keen on the guy who does the
brekkie shift on radio in Goldtown. Like, he should know,
because he’s Mr. Avery’s son. Boxy’s mum died in a car
crash a while ago, which was real sad, because, Boxy’s
mum was real beaut.
Most of the guys in my class, wished they were real old,
like twenty-five or thirty, so they could date Miss Last.
Annabelle, my sister, would say, “As if.”
My worst nightmare is Cecil Blake - Big Cec. He sort of
regards me as his personal sparring partner, except I
don’t get to do much of the spar. He’s a real big bloke and
reckons he’s going to play Rugby League for Parramatta,
or one of the big Sydney teams.
Big Cec loves footy and he’s always ready to try out a
new form of tackle - on me. Annabelle fixed him real
good once, right in front of his mates, at the ‘burger shop
in town. Stupid wacka now thinks he’s in love with her.
“Dream on,” says Annabelle. She’s always got these
real clever sayings.
Yeah! School’s okay, I guess. But the weekends are
better. We check out the movies on Saturday morning
and play footie in the arvo. Swimming and eeling, in
Fergusson’s Dam in the summer.

Sunday morning is real beaut in Shelby, for a while I
was filling in for ‘Jug Ears’ Lewis, he’s got the paper
run and delivered all the Sunday papers. It’s an eye
opener to see Shelby at rest.
We live on Chifley Street, named after an old Prime
Minister who once had a cool job as an engine driver.
It’s fun seeing what our neighbours do.
Old Mr. McCluskey is always mowing his lawn. Dave
and Lynne Bryant are our next-door neighbours.
They love to sit on their veranda drinking coffee and
reading the
Sun Herald
. My best mate, Tony Flinte,
reckons they’re Yuppies. No way, they’re real kind
and when I do the paper run, they’re always good for
a two-dollar tip.
Others still sleep in - lucky stiffs.
That is except us, Kellys, at number 24.

Sunday morning is hectic for our family - I thought it
was supposed to be a day of rest - fat chance of that.
Mum is a Sunday school teacher and Annabelle,
who wants to show her latest fashion to her equally
fashion-conscious girlfriends, were doing what girls
do in preparing for the trip into town. We, Kelly men,
are in charge of making breakfast. Dad’s in charge of
toast making, juice and coffee. And me, I get to cook
the bacon and eggs.
Once Mum and Annabelle leave for church, we bung
the dishes in the dishwasher. We can then relax and
watch the videos of Saturday night’s football game.

Now my sister, Annabelle, she’s fourteen, going on
fifteen. She never walks like normal humans; she
glides, runs or waltzes. She always turns to Dad when
she gets a new dress, which she did this week. I’m
just about to get stuck into making the brekkie when
in comes Annabelle, pirouetting around showing off
her pale green skirt and blouse, which the saleslady
at
Bonnie’s Boutique
said matched her dark auburn
hair and emerald eyes.
“How do you like my new ensemble, Daddy?”
“You look like a princess, honey,” replied Dad.
“You look like a horse
Annasmell
,” I said, quick as a
flash. “An’ I hear you’re only goin’ to church to check
on Lofty Boden. We all reckon, Annabelle’s real gone
on him”
“Stollery!” said Mum, a bit miffed, “Your sister’s name
is Annabelle.”
“Yeah an’ she’s Anna
smell
on account of that perfume
them stupid softy Kates use - pooh what a pong.”
All of Annabelle’s mates are in a gang, which I call
the Young Softy Kates. Annabelle gets real cranky
and says, “We’re the
Young Sophisticates
and we’re

not a gang; we’re a group of highly intelligent young
women who look to the more beautiful things in life
and eschew the common things, like pop music.” I had
to ask Mum what eschew meant. She showed me how
to look the word up on computer and great, it meant
‘abstain from’. Had to look that word up too. “Give
up”. Y’know, looking up words is fun. Dad reckons I
should get a notebook and write down a word I don’t
know and look it up. He says if I do only one word a
day. I’ve got hundreds at the end of the year. I reckon
it would be hard for Annabelle to eschew or abstain
or give up, them stupid chick and soapie magazines.
I tell her, “Good one, Annabelle, wait till they hear you
rave on about your new Guy Sebastian CD, Nanna
gave you. Bet you didn’t
eschew
Lofty Boden.”
“You’ll understand these things when you grow older,”
says Mum. When’s that going to be, I think to myself.
Annabelle began to blush. It was not a secret that she
had a crush on Andy – we call him Lofty because of
his height - Boden, the local policeman’s son and he
was dead keen on her. Lofty is a big wheel at the high
school, he’s a prefect and captain of the rugby team,
and is studying like crazy so as he can go to the Police
Academy at Goulburn.

Now when a guy gets a crush on a girl, he doesn’t
want the whole world knowing about it. Yeah, so I
am real sweet on Linda Flinte, Tony’s beaut sister. No
way’s known is Annabelle and the rest of her soppy
girlfriends going to know, so they can heap stupid girl
stuff on me. No way.
Linda really wants to be a TV actress, in fact, she’s
written to
Home and Away
and to Simmone Jade
from
McLeod’s Daughters
on what does she need to
do. Kate, who was in
Home and Away
and Simmone
Jade sent her nice letters and some beaut photos.
Tony made some copies on his computer, now all the
guys in our gang have got one of each.
It’d be bad enough if my mates got wind of me liking
Linda Flinte. So, in the interest of the Kelly pride and
to show that I didn’t give a hoot for Linda. I resorted
to my secret weapon, a joke, at poor Linda’s expense.
We call her
Linda The Cinder
at school. “Whaddya
reckon Dad? Linda The Cinder wants to be a television
soapie star.” Imagine this.
The winnah of worst
actress goes to …Lindah The Cindah

Then, I hit them with the punch line.

“Hey. Knock, knock, who’s there?
Linda,
Linda who?
Linda hand.”
Dad reckoned that was a hoot. Mum and Annabelle,
weren’t laughing. I’m beginning to think girls don’t
have a sense of humour.
Annabelle butted in: “You can talk,
insect
. I saw Linda
Flinte’s name written on
your
school bag with a couple
of hearts, and I saw an e-mail
you
wrote to Tony Flinte
asking when Linda’s birthday was. What is more,
parents dear, he asked Miss Last what cornflower
blue meant.”
Mum is still in dreamland.
“Linda’s a lovely girl and
aren’t
her eyes blue,” she
says. “Yes - in fact you could say they were
cornflower
blue.”
“
Cornflower blue

Good one Dad, I’m thinking.

Thinking she’s real smart, she wrinkles her nose at
me and sticks out her tongue. Jeez, was my face
burning. Then she’s in with the old Annabelle quick
retort. She’s deadly good at that.
“As Ms. McNeill, my drama teacher would say
‘Methinks the lad doth protest much’.”
“What’s that mean,
Annasmell
?”
“It means, little brother, dear, that
you like
Linda
Flinte, as in I
like
her to be my
girlfriend
. As for making
those inane jokes, pretending you
don’t
like her, well,
they do not convince me. Mother, Father, isn’t puppy
love wonderful.”
“Oh yeah! Like you don’t e-mail Lofty Boden, “Dear
Andrew...”. I’ve seen it,
Annasmell
.”
I think I may have hit a nerve here. Her face goes all
white then red and she turns her back on me.
“The child lives in a dream world”, she says, colder
than the ice in Mum’s freezer. “
Do
grow up Stollery.
Mr Avery agrees with you mum, that Stollery has a
Walter Mitty complex.”

Yowie! Did that ever hurt. Okay, so mum calls me ‘her
little Walter Mitty’ on account of a DVD Nanna lent
us, after my last school report.
Walter Mitty was this bloke, played by an old actor
called Danny Kaye, who dreamt he was all sorts of
heroes. It’s not a bad movie for an oldie.
Mr. Avery said that I was extremely good at
composition but believed I had a Walter Mitty
complex.
Good old Mum, to the rescue again.
“Stollery has a lovely and very vivid imagination and
who knows, he may be a famous writer one day.”
“No way Mum. I’m goin’ to be a cricket star. Still reckon
Annasmell
looks like a horse and a camel too though.”
“Stollery, Annabelle does
not
look like a horse.”
“Betcha a dollar she does.”
“Mother why don’t you just
banish
this child,” said
Annabelle.
“Stollery, you apologise to your sister right now,” says
Mum and the way Mum said it, she meant it.

Now how about attending to the eggs.”
Annabelle laughed. “Good one, Daddy”
Despite our little tiffs, I love Annabelle very much
and would fight any guy who hurts her, Lofty Boden
included, despite his size. Oh well, let’s get breakfast
underway. Gee it’s real neat to watch the eggs fall
into the pan…real neat.
