Fruit Trees by Andrew Clark Harmony Garden Centre Rose Pruning Checklist

 Look for spindly stems. Follow these down to
where they're about the thickness of a biro.
Then remove them.

 Prune out any branches that are totally dead or
that have die back (these require punning back
to the main stem or in severe cases at the
stump level).

 Prune to encourage an open vase shape which
opens up the centre of the bush, this is to
create air circulation reducing the plants
susceptibility to disease.

 In winter you can remove large sections of the
rose bush. Do this every couple of years to
rejuvenate new growth. Remove any old
branches or any stems that look warty and
crinkly.

 Prune any suckers which might be emerging
from the ground beside your rose or otherwise
below the graft.

 Always Look for an outward facing bud and
prune on a 45 degree angle so any natural rain
or water runs away from where the bud forms
and new growth emerges. If you cut to an
inward facing bud the direction of the new
growth will cluster in the centre.

 Heritage roses don't need a lot of pruning. Just
prune them to shape and tip prune regularly.
Remove any dead bits.

 Ground cover roses are best pruned hard, if
you are using loppers just cut them back,
almost to ground level and feed well.

 Now the jobs almost done be sure to burn any
pruned material as it may harbour disease.

 Be sure once all pruned, that you give your
roses a spray with lime sulphur. This is a must
and helps rid any scale, mites and diseases.
