In an evocative and intimate exchange, two performers sing to one another from either side of a filmy theatrical curtain, which both separates and connects them.

Situated within the gardens at Heide, I Can Eat Glass, It Doesn’t Hurt Me imaginatively evokes the idea of ‘wandering sculptures’, drawing inspiration from the surrealist concept of ‘dream objects’ and the transference of energies between bodies and objects.

A SONG OF TWO EYEBALLS PRESENTED BY MICHELLE USSHER
Mothers’ Day, Sunday 8 May, 2pm & 3pm

Performed by Darcy Carroll and Zachary McCulloch
Based on a short story by artist Michelle Ussher, this ten minute opera is a surreal, psychological romance between two eyeballs, performed by two singers who embody the psyche of Ussher’s porcelain sculptures Camilla, 2014, and Ugo, 2014.

Suitable for primary school children, ages 5 to 12.
SPRAY
Sunday 10 April, 10am–1pm
Melbourne’s famous street art becomes accessible for children in this artist-led workshop. Utilising a range of spray painting techniques children will design and make paper stencils to use as the basis for their own piece of portable street art.

HEAVENLY CREATURES
Sunday 1 May, 10am–1pm
Led by multi-disciplinary artist Michelle Mills, children will team up to write a script, sculpt a character and animate a movie inspired by the fantastical creatures that hide in Heide’s gardens.

CAST AWAY

Children will transform everyday objects into precious sculptures using a range of simple casting techniques in this artist-led workshop with ceramicist Marlize van Rijswijk

Take on the Heide Detective challenge by solving cryptic clues and following a map that will lead you around the exhibitions, gardens and buildings, or come on a musical adventure using our NEW Sculpture Sounds activity. Each detective to complete a trail wins a prize from the lucky dip!

In 1963, the Reeds commissioned David McGlashan of McGlashan & Everist Architects to build a home that had a sense of mystery and romance, and one that would house their growing art collection—a ‘gallery to be lived in’. Join a volunteer guide and learn about the design and construction of the iconic modernist building now known as Heide II.

Albert Tucker introduced Joy Hester to Sunday Reed in 1939 at the Herald exhibition of French and British Painting, shown at the Melbourne Town Hall. Jill Nicol, volunteer guide, discusses the life-long friendship between the two women.

Sunday Reed established the historic Heide I kitchen garden in 1936, placing an emphasis on the cultivation of fresh produce, a tradition that continues today. Join a volunteer guide for a tour of the Heide I and Heide II kitchen gardens, and learn about their history and development.
