The Melbourne Vixens have made it two wins in a row against New Zealand teams, after defeating the Mainland Tactix 69 – 48 in captain Madison Robinson’s 100th ANZ Championship game.
After defeating the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic convincingly last week, the Vixens continued their good form to secure two wins in a row. The Vixens lead he entire match, scoring the first goal in 15 seconds and extending the lead to 20 goals before the final siren.
The Tactix struggled to find a flow in their attacking end, with Melbourne defender Geva Mentor menacing in defence, finishing with three intercepts and seven deflections for the match.
The Tactix made changes in every quarter to try to stop the damage of the Vixens’ attack and mid-court, however were ineffective with the visitors on fire, playing possibly their best game of the year.
A nasty fall by Vixen Jo Weston, caused concern throughout the Melbourne team’s camp in the third quarter, however the defender was able to finish out the quarter before moving to the bench halfway through the final term.
With the game all by won with an 18-goal lead, the Vixens were able to give younger players a run on court, with Emily Mannix, Chloe Watson and Kim Commane getting a chance to impress in the later stages of the game. The Vixens also celebrated the return of shooter Karyn Bailey, who missed the last two games with a foot injury. Bailey didn’t miss a beat in her return game, scoring 50 goals for the match. The connection between her and the rest of the attacking line made it look like they hadn’t missed a beat.
Robinson was another player for the Vixens who impressed, proving unstoppable in her 100th game, and she was rewarded by being given MVP of the match for her efforts. Robinson finished the match with 21 goal assists, 35 feeds and 29 centre pass receives, and forced the Tactix to change their wing defence constantly throughout the match.
The win temporarily moved the Vixens into third spot on the Australian conference ladder, however they were pushed back down to fourth after the West Coast Fever defeated the Magic later that night.
The Vixens now head home in a rematch with the NSW Swifts, who defeated the Vixens by 15 in the opening round of the season.
