Review of Mother’s Ruin: A Cabaret about Gin (4 out of 5 stars)

A show celebrating cabaret’s favourite drink. It seamed fitting that the ladies- Maeve Marsden and Libby Wood from cabaret group Lady Sings It Better began the show at The Butterfly Club last night, telling us to hop up and get a drink from the bar at any point, as- “we’re fun when you’re drunk.”

I did indeed stock up before entering the show, not that I needed to be drunk to be thoroughly entertained by the vivacious ladies, and hilarious keys player and vocalist.

Tunes from Elton John and Amy Winehouse unified the crowd, as the ladies took us through a history of gin, and brought us fresh songs in the form of such great titles as “how gin met tonic.”

There were of course a few moments paying respect to the dark side of having gin as a  friend- the ladies touched on recent break-ups. Their harmonies are amazing to listen to as you take a moment to soak up the solace.

Watching a show with Maeve and Libby is like watching two of your friends perform- if your friends are very talented cabaret stars. Shows tend to sell out, so book now!
