Two of Australian golf’s rising stars are confirmed starters for this year’s Australian PGA Championship at the Royal Pines Golf resort on the Gold Coast in December.
World number 50, John Senden, is one; the other is Steven Bowditch.
Senden won the Valspar Championship in March, and tied for 8th at the U.S Masters. He comes to Australia brimming with confidence and is looking forward to the event; especially with the support local players receive from fans.
“ It’s always nice returning home a winner, the reception we get from Australian sports fans makes the Aussie summer exciting”, Senden said.
The rejuvenated Royal Pines course will provide a challenge for Senden, who is seeking his first Australian PGA win.
“This will be my first time playing the Australian PGA Championship on the Gold Coast. I have heard good things about the redesigned front nine holes at RACV Royal Pines resort,” he added.
Fellow Aussie Steven Bowditch has also enjoyed a successful 2014 and climbed to number 80 in the world thanks to a runner-up finish at the PGA ‘s Frys.com Open. He’s looking to capitalise on his success and has set a few goals for himself this year. One of them is winning the Australian PGA.
“I achieved one of my career goals by winning on the PGA tour this year, but winning the Australian PGA Championship is certainly high on my priority list,” he said.
Brian Thorburn, CEO of the Australian PGA, said Australian golf fans were in for a treat with two of Australia’s entertaining golfers playing on their home turf. He added that the inclusion of world number 2, Adam Scott, was an extra bonus.
“It is fantastic to have two of our PGA tour winners teeing up in the Australian PGA championship, especially two proud Queenslanders…John [Senden] is renowned for his solid ball striking and Steven’s style of play is particularly exciting to watch, so along with defending champion Adam Scott there is going to be plenty of action unfolding on the Gold Coast,” Mr Thorburn said.
Other high profile players to sign up for the event include American Boo Weekley, Robert Allenby, Peter Lonard, Craig Parry, Greg Chalmers and Daniel Popovic.
