Brew your way to better skin

By Dani Smith.

When you’ve had a bad day, there is nothing like curling up with a steaming hot mug of tea to make you feel better. As well as the obvious benefit of keeping you hydrated, drinking certain types of teas can actually improve your skin’s health too. So if you want to reduce redness, sooth dry skin or just give your complexion a little detox, it’s time to ditch your latte and reach for the kettle.

Green tea for glowing skin

Although green tea does contain caffeine, it’s a relatively small amount, only 35mg per cup versus 100-200mg per cup for coffee. Green tea is also packed full of antioxidants which means inflammation and skin redness is reduced. When you’re finished drinking your cuppa, you can pop the cool teabags over your eyes to shrink those under-eye bags. You can also brew an extra cup, pour it into a spray bottle and use as a toner.

Chamomile for calm skin

Not only is chamomile tea great for relaxing your mind, it’s also great for calming down your skin. Chamomile is a natural anti-inflammatory and has been shown to combat eczema and skin inflammation. It also has a very mellow taste, meaning it’s not as hard to swallow (literally) as a lot of herbal teas are. As an added bonus, chamomile is also a mild muscle relaxant, making it the perfect “time of the month” companion to relieve cramps.

Peppermint for dull skin

Peppermint tea is a refresher in more than just taste, also promoting the growth of new skin cells, giving a much needed boost to dry or dull skin. The menthol in peppermint can also reduce oil production so it’s a must-have tea for those with oily skin. For the same reason, peppermint tea can also be useful to help treat acne-prone skin. Brewing a pot of this is also great for calming nervous tummies and soothing stomach cramps.

Rooibos for acne reduction

Rooibos is a red bush tea from South Africa and is completely caffeine free. Like green tea, it has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe and reduce acne. It’s also chock full of antioxidants and is rumoured to have anti-ageing properties too. Cooled Rooibos can also be applied to pimples to zap them in record time.
