The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, has paid tribute to Brian John Wyatt who passed away earlier this week.

Brian John Wyatt was a Churchill Fellow with nearly 40 years’ experience in the administration of Aboriginal affairs.

“Mr Wyatt was a giant of native title in this country. He was a true fighter for native title and land rights across Australia,” Minister Scullion said.

“As Chief Executive Officer of the National Native Title Council, Mr Wyatt worked with native title holders and claimants, industry and government to improve the process for recognising native title rights and interests.

“Mr Wyatt was a strong and wise leader who took the voice of Indigenous peoples from across Australia to the world as a regular participant at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues as well as the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

“I am pleased to have worked with Mr Wyatt and value the advice and guidance he has provided, including as the Deputy Chair of the Expert Indigenous Working Group that has provided advice to the Council of Australian Governments Investigation into Indigenous land administration and use.
