FRINGWORLD 2017 – Alan Anderson: Whisky for Dafties (4.5 stars)

Review by Kieran Eaton

Alan Anderson lives for whisky. Does this alone make him a stereotypical Scotsman? No, it makes him an expert on whisky. It’s his fiery Scottish brogue that adds to the profile. Playing to his strengths in Whisky of Dafties, Anderson attempts to educate the less well-versed drinkers of the famous spirit.

It doesn’t take long to realise that Anderson likes a tipple. He’s definitely knocked back a few in his time! This jovial Scot is a total muck-about who knows how to work a crowd and keep them entertained. He states that he only will give the front row drinks but there’s something in his tone that indicates they may be more liberally shared around. Onstage sit a lot of of whisky bottles, more than enough for the hopeful crowd.

Anderson banters with the audience early, asking where we are from and who is a hardcore whisky drinker. He knows that whisky is not for the faint-hearted so is prepared to size us up and let the tough get going.Anderson is a highly skilled comedian with obvious experience in getting a crowd onside. He’s not afraid to reference other comedy shows he has done, which unveils a bit of his comedic thought process.

Anderson’s relaxed style makes it seems like just an old mate giving his opinion on things. There are jokes made at the crowd’s expense, so beware if you feel sensitive to insults! Take this guy in jest because you know he wants to be your friend not your enemy. Alan Anderson – Whisky for Dafties is good times all round.
