FRINGEWORLD 2017 – The Bedroom Philosopher – Cat Show (4 Stars)

Review by Kieran Eaton

The Bedroom Philosopher – Cat Show is very much its title. Musical comedian, Justin Hazelwood not only dresses like a cat, but he sings and talks about cats for the entire show! Hazelwood is one cool cat himself, he’s a bit of a hipster and likes to be known as The Bedroom Philosopher.

Hazelwood is pretty much a cool cat, the one that young hipsters like. He gives off the vibe of a university drop-out, someone who likes to think deeply but in his own unstructured way. This creates opportunity for an anything goes night, and Hazelwood delivers. He does warn that he is just trialing some stuff but this maverick of Australian comedy should embrace the trials and tribulations of being an alternative stand-up comic. Hazelwood does not interact much with the crowd but that goes hand in hand with his slightly socially awkward personality. He seems to talk from the heart and I feel more people should do this because you then realise that we can all be cool in our own way.

Being an independent thinker, Hazelwood does not mind testing the crowd’s sensibilities by joking that he kept his dead cat – proving to the crowd by displaying the artefact on stage! Most of the crowd totally embraces this weirdness because they know it’s all about the art of getting into person’s soul.

The Bedroom Philosopher takes you on an absurdist roller-coaster. You’re in safe hands with this bundle of good energy. The Bedroom Philosopher – Cat Show is definitely one of a kind that should be like a fine wine – it will only get better with time.
