Stretched Pizza – Melbourne
While everyone is still flying high on the pomp, glamour and gossip-mongering of the Royal Wedding, Stretched Pizza will serve up free pizzas to anyone who possesses a living UK royal’s name from the House of Windsor on the Queen’s Birthday – Monday 11th June.
Lucky customers named Elizabeth, Phillip, Charles, Camilla, William, Harry, Kate, Meghan, George, Charlotte and Louis can choose between a No Brainer (aka Margherita), Miss Piggy (aka Capricciosa), Planet of the Vegans or El Chapo Cobuzman (Mexican). These are available on Stretched’s much-loved gluten free bases if required.
Royalists will need to show ID (license or passport) to redeem their free pizza, which will need to be collected from Stretched at 53 Moreland Rd, Coburg.
Pizza, in fact, has quite the royal connection – legend would have it that in 1889, Queen Margherita discovered pizza when she took a tour around the Italian kingdom. Queenie loved the pizza flat bread so much that she summoned Chef Raffaele Esposito to her palace and ordered him to bake some pizzas for her tasting. Of the three pizzas he created, the Queen strongly preferred the pizza swathed in the colours of the Italian flag: red (tomato), green (basil), and white (mozzarella) – and presto! The Pizza Margherita was born.
Stretched takes its name from its technique – hand-stretching (as opposed to rolling with a pin) is a traditional method in which the dough stretches naturally, resulting in a more even crust that’s less likely to tear, and a delicious, fluffy base.
Opening to the public in April this year, Stretched Pizza has already been a massive hit for the fact that it caters to food lovers of every kind: gluten free bases are no extra charge (unlike other pizza restaurants), plus there are five vegan and seven vegetarian options available. There is also a take-way alcohol license, featuring wine, and Hawkers and O’Brien (gluten free) beer.
Stretched is the new culinary venture from husband and wife duo chef Dario D’Agostino and Ly Nguyen, along with ex-banker turned pizza-maker Joe Codespoti – the team behind St Kilda’s iconic Pizza e Birra and the booming Port Melbourne and Brunswick brunch spots Long Story Short.
