Review by Kieran Eaton
Will You Accept This Rose? is about the love life of Australian comedian, Rose Callaghan. Now when I say love, I mean her struggles to find a loving partner. Luckily, she displays an amazing sense of humour in turning her troubles with men into well-crafted gags.
Callahan is obsessed with reality tv: especially The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. To assist the non-fans and unitiated she uses PowerPoint slides to break down the different characters. These characters mostly include jocks and bitches. In her description, Callaghan goes into of her favourite and least favourite characters. Some these characters she has mild obsessions over.
From the get-go, Callaghan is feisty. Starting the show with a big “Hello c—s” sets the tone for the show and her self-depreciation helps her relax with the crowd. You get an idea of her insecurity when she says she is five feet tall and not four feet 11 inches! She also raises awareness of her lacking the stereotypical looks for an attractive Australian woman (though she really doesn’t have anything to worry about.) Callaghan bounces from her love issues to the love based reality shows’ unrealistic expectations of love. This is no Hollywood love story in that she meets a prince and lives happily ever after. However, as a proud feminist, this does not bother her one bit!
The show beautifully describes awkwardness in dating, in this Tinder age. I especially like that she is not scared to get graphic in details of her stories. Will You Accept This Rose? is an excellent show for either gender and age groups, so go before she finds love.
