FRINGEWORLD 2017 – Amy Howerska SMASHCAT (4 stars)

“Ok, I’m just putting this out there, but every artist has to be a little bit shit at the beginning. They have to have an awkward phase.” Well, Amy Howerska is clearly over her awkward phase! She expertly manages the crowd with an energy that never wavers. Her explosive entrance – dressed in homage to one of her icons – proves that she is not afraid to get up close and personal, and that she takes the piss out of herself as often as possible.

Howerska is a class act. Her comedy is relatable, especially for the over 30s (a demographic I am 100% in!) but she speaks of things we all can appreciate: having a group of couple friends who go on ski trips together, being the one wino who can’t get their life together, working out just how Jewish a person has to be before declaring themselves a Jew. Howerska really takes you into her world. She is so warm and sweet, her delivery is confident and fun, it feels like you’re with a friend, catching up for a few laughs.

To anyone who has ever obsessed over brilliant musicians from the past, like Freddie Mercury and David Bowie, this is the show for you. Howerska relates the story of explaining her music to a teenager – and how said teenager wouldn’t appreciate it if One Direction sang it to her naked! Howerska’s passion for good music and good art is paramount, she takes a moment to encourage the arts and pay homage to the legends, while being the crazy funny gal that she is. Howerska’s charm is infectious – she’s a gem.
