Grill’d Richmond was the venue for the recent launch of the newest additions to the menu of this popular Australian burger chain. As for the bunch of food lovers gathered in anticipation? We were more than ready to take up the taste challenge!

Grill’d introduced their Amazing Cheese Burger and Hemp Therapea Burger nationwide last week. Their ‘one-of-a-kind’ plant-based burgers were a long time in the making, taking the Grill’d team of chefs six months to perfect. According to the Grill’d Founder and Managing Director Simon Crowe, the idea of introducing two plant based burgers were based on the fact that “Australia is the third fastest growing vegan market in the world, with 11.2% of its population classifying themselves as vegetarian.”

First we were introduced to the Amazing Vegan Cheeseburger. Several mouthfuls later I was keen to savour more, admittedly downing more than my fair share! Delving deeper into the flavour profile of the Amazing Vegan Cheeseburger, we discovered the vegan patty is a combination of chickpeas, pea protein, teff, rice flour, beetroot powder and cracked pepper, designed to ‘look and taste like a real beef cheeseburger’. Other ingredients include dill pickle, onion and vegan cheese, accompanied with dijon mustard, tomato sauce and vegan mayo. Probing further into the ingredients that make for this ‘lip-smacking deliciousness’, we found that Grill’d went through extensive test kitchen hours and taste tests to finalise their vegan cheese and vegan mayo, which translated to the magic on the plate.

I think while the Amazing Vegan Cheeseburger will get you talking between mouthfuls, the Hemp Therapea burger is set to excite the palate.

Crowe said: “Following the recent legalisation of hemp as an approved food source in Australia, Grill’d is taking the first stride, with a burger made from nutritious hemp seeds. Hemp seeds are a highly sustainable crop; removing more C02 from the air than trees and requiring a lot less water. Unlike corn, soy wheat and rice, it doesn’t require pesticides or herbicides and isn’t plagued by their allergies. The product yields food that is more nutritious, including the essential oil Omega 3.”

Immediately the Hemp Therapea Burger landed ready for tasting, my nose buds were ahead of the game. The patty in this burger is a combo of green peas, fresh mint, gluten-free crumb and hemp seeds. The flavour is ramped up by a mix of ingredients like smashed avocado, cos lettuce, beetroot, fresh basil leaves, smoked sea salt and tzatziki, which soon had my taste buds dancing! The flavour combinations were a delight and the burger flew off the plate in short time. By the end of it all I was in food heaven, with a new go-to-burger on my list.

I can safely say that if you’re a vegan or vegetarian, or a meat lover like me, or even ‘a flexitarian who simply wants to enjoy a non-meat meal but doesn’t want to compromise on taste, Grill’d has you covered’.

Enjoy and share your Grill’d experience by tagging us in a picture of you digging into your Hemp Therapea or Vegan Cheeseburger or both!
