Dandenong Market, Melbourne’s most multicultural market, will welcome the Year of the Dog in style at their Lunar New Year Festival, on Sunday 25 February 2018. With Dragon and lion dancing, Chinese drumming and Taekwondo headlining the event, it is set to be the biggest Lunar New Year Festival to date.
The free community event will offer a pop-up food bazaar with an additional 16 street-food vendors and food trucks allowing visitors to taste the flavours of China, Vietnam, Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Nepal. Expect deliciously filling food from traditional to pan-Asian including hoppa pancakes (Korean style pancake), khaw pad saporod (Thai pineapple fried rice) and Cambodian street BBQ meats.
Live entertainment will feature over nine impressive performances including traditional Chinese drumming, lion dancing, a flower dragon dance incorporating Chinese folk dancing, skilled martial arts and much more. Market goers will be blown away by the awe-inspiring triple lion dance and dragon dance, which features a flying dragon spanning over 20 meters.
Jennifer Hibbs, General Manager of Dandenong Market, says the Lunar New Year Festival is one of the most colourful and well-attended festivals of the year due to the region’s large multicultural population.

11am: Traditional Chinese dance performance – 20 dances performing a number of dance styles and techniques
12pm: Jow Ga Kuen Dragon & Lion Dance Association – Lion dance
12:30pm: Traditional Chinese dance performance – long sleeve dance, long fan dance, ribbon dance, kung fu dance
1pm: Jow Ga Kuen Dragon & Lion Dance Association – Dragon dance featuring a flying dragon in the sky spanning over 20 meters 1:20pm: Chanh Dao Buddhist Youth Association – Traditional Vietnamese dance with a modern twist
1:30pm: The Australian Chinese Music Ensemble
2:30pm: VTEAM Taekwondo
3:30pm: Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne – Flower Dragon dance
