Melbourne – Vegan High Tea – Aunt Maggie’s Carlton
Words and Photography by Katelyn Rew
Aunt Maggie’s is synonymous with fresh organic produce, wonderful natural products, and is quite the institution for health conscious shoppers in the know. When I heard the new Carlton store was starting a regular Vegan High Tea, I absolutely had to check it out for myself.
Upon entry the store looked fabulous, with lots of natural light seeping over shelves stocked with healthy goodies. We took our seats in the new cafe towards the back of the store in anticipation of an afternoon of sampling tasty vegan treats. Purely from an aesthetic point of view, our tiered high tea did not disappoint. The beautiful colours were pronounced as we surveyed our selection of tostada’s, crostini’s, scones and truffles. A mixed berry, lime and rosewater kombucha mocktail paid final compliment to such a visually appealing experience, topped off with a warming pot of chai tea…and that’s before mention of taste!
With an array of stunning desserts in front of me, it was hard to start with the savouries! However after one bite of the cucumber and almond feta sandwich, I was hooked. The feta was light and creamy, and for those unaware it could easily have passed for real feta. The BQQ jackfruit tostada was equally mouthwatering. I absolutely love the versatility of jackfruit in vegan cooking, so it was pleasing to see it make an appearance. The Mediterranean Antipasti Skewer with fresh olives and raw zucchini was absolutely divine, accompanied with a roasted mushroom and dill pate that simply melted in my mouth. What a perfect combination of savouries to prepare the palette for a selection of sweet treats after a satisfying first round!
Warm scones and truffles arrived next. A snack reminiscent of high teas of old. The sweet cream that came with the scones was pure perfection, and a lighter, fluffier alternative to real cream. The sticky date and hummingbird cupcake had just the right amount of sweetness, and left a lovely lingering flavour as my last treat of the day.
All in all we had a fabulous afternoon experiencing some fine vegan delicacies. It was fantastic to see that so much thought had gone into each menu item, with inventive flavour combinations working superbly together.
Aunt Maggie’s Vegan High Tea is a great day out in Carlton for vegans and non vegans alike.
