Southgate restaurants are turning up the heat with a host of exciting events, masterclasses and Father’s Day celebrations.

At the top of the event list is the new Southbank Progressive Dinners – The Winter Trail, hosted by three Southgate restaurants. Southgate is perhaps the ultimate destination for this style of dinner in winter – whether it’s wind, rain or hail outside you’ll be staying warm as you enjoy three courses across three different restaurants, all under one roof!

The progressive dinners are hosted by Red Emperor, La Camera Southgate and Hophaus with Waterslide Bar billed as the official pre and post dinner drinks venue. Progressive Dinners are available Sunday to Thursday evenings from 12 August to 6 September. In one night, let your tastebuds travel from Germany to Italy to China, without the need for a passport. On Sunday 12 August, Pure South Dining are hosting Wine Tasmania’s annual VIN Diemen festival, bringing 100 wines from over 20 Tasmanian vinters together with their rare produce on the banks of the Yarra River. Pure South Dining’s remote artisan food suppliers will come together with wines from each region, offering a truly intimate experience of the ‘pure south’s’ startling fresh produce.

Family-favourite La Camera Southgate is set to impress with their second wonderful winter performance event. On the 27 August the celebrated Opera Night returns – join sopranos Samantha Fawcett U’Ren, Laura Slavin, and Suzanne Shakespeare as they perform some of your favourite arias, combining culture and cuisine in one electrifying evening.

Warm your bones with a whisky and learn something new along the way with one of Southgate’s stellar whisky masterclasses. Waterslide Bar are hosting intimate masterclass dedicated to some of the rarest and finest whisky in the world (booked at your convenience, with a minimum of two and maximum of fifteen in your group), while famed Irish pub P.J.O’Brien’s has a whiskey masterclass in the calendar. On  15 August the Peated Malts of Distinction masterclass will unearth some of Scotland and Ireland’s delicious peated single malts.

On 7 September, Pure South Dining is hosting an exceptional evening dedicated to ethically sourced and sustainable produce. Meet the Makers of Pure South will highlight delicious produce from Tasmania’s most sought after ethical farmers: Nichols Poultry and Mount Gnomon Farm, with celebrated head farmers from both businesses hosting the event. To top it all off, each course will be expertly matched with award-winning wines from Josef Chromy Wines, with the winemaker also in attendance.

In September, when the chill (hopefully) begins to ease, our restaurants will turn on the charm, with an assortment of fun and delicious Father’s Day specials and events. Whatever your Dad likes, there’s something here for him – from a photo booth and prizes for the Best ‘Dad Joke’ at La Camera, to free drinks for Dad at Hophaus, P.J.O’brien’s, Blue Train and Bear Brass and a special Father’s Day Chef Selection at Tutto Bene. Meanwhile the ever-delectable Damon Bradley is celebrating ‘man’s best friend’, donating $3 from every pancake sold on the day to the Lost Dog’s Home.

Effervescent Sundays continue to steal the show at Southgate, with long lunches and sparkling accompaniments consistently on the menu. ‘Free Flowing Champagne Sunday Lunches’ at Pure South Dining continue, while Tutto Bene’s Sparkling Sundays pairs delicious two or three-course Italian feasts, with bottomless premium Italian sparkling.

DANDENONG MARKET THROWS THE BIGGEST BURGER BASH ON NATIONAL BURGER DAY – SUNDAY 27 MAY

Dandenong Market – National Burger Day – Melbourne

**Full Burger List & Prices Below

Melbourne’s first Pizza Burger and Shake Burger to make their debut at one of Victoria’s oldest markets

Melbourne’s most loved burger party is back for one-day only at Dandenong Market on Sunday 27 May to celebrate National Burger Day.

For one delicious day, 21 of the market’s vendors are turning burger mad and will offer their own limited-edition burgers. Running from the savoury to sweet – representing a host of different cuisines – these clever creations will take anyone’s burger obsession to the next level.

Burger Day 3[2]

Burger lovers have the opportunity to munch on Melbourne’s first ever pizza burger from Dandy Pizza (two Margherita pizzas as ‘buns’, with a beef patty, cheese, fresh sliced tomato, spinach and homemade sauce), bite into Thela Indian Street Food’s Indian Stack Burger (rice pancake buns, vegetable samosas, cheese, avocado and lamb keema), chomp into Market Tavern’s Schnitzel Burger (2 chicken parma ‘buns’, fried egg, tomato and lettuce) or jump on the charcoal trend with the Charcoal Burger.

Market goers will be able to indulge in a sweet tooth’s dream with over seven dessert burgers. After the success at last year’s Burger Day, Dandee Donuts will be recreating their Tim Tam burger: Tim Tam, jam sauce and cream inside two steaming hot Dandee Donuts. A Lamington Burger, a Donut Ice-cream Burger and another Melbourne first – The Monster Burger Shake: a smoothie topped with a cinnamon donut, chocolate sponge, strawberries, toffee, white chocolate syrup and whipped cream – will all be on offer.

Burger Day 1[2]

The burger royalty who have an adventurous appetite can take part in the professional burger eating competition and demolish The Double Chompster:a 900-gram burger including 5 burger buns, 8 beef patties, 8 cheese slices, bacon rashers, onions, pickles, ketchup, mustard and BBQ sauce. The burger has been created by Instagram food sensation and burger faithful Riley ‘Chompamatic’ Murphy (@chompamatic) for Dandenong Market’s burger specialist, The Grill. If contestants conquer this, they have the chance to win $500.

Burger Day 4[2]

Briony Walker, Marketing Manager at Dandenong Market, says Dandenong Market will play host to Melbourne’s biggest burger party in 2018 with more than 25,000 people expected to attend.

“After the success of last year’s Burger Day celebrations, we and the stall holders knew we had to step it up a notch; and with double the amount of traders this year, no one will go hungry!

“This free, community event has something to offer for everyone – from pizza lovers to ice-cream lovers – all in the shape of a burger,” Walker said.

Visitors can have their Dandenong Market ‘Burger Passport’ stamped at each participating trader and go into the running to win $500 in Dandenong Market vouchers. Each stamp counts as a separate entry, so conquer all 25 limited- edition burgers and get 25 entries to win big.

To top off the mouth-watering festivities, The Grill will also be giving away unlimited burgers for one year. Enter via Dandenong Market’s Facebook page and go in the draw to treat your friends for 12 burger-endless months.

Grand Opening of Miss Ping’s Thai Eatery

Miss Ping’s Thai Eatery – Doncaster, Melbourne

Review by Sumaiya Rizvi – instagram.com/melbourne_blog

The grand opening of Miss Ping’s Thai Eatery was aptly themed: a ‘Night in Bangkok’, evoking memories of vibrant night markets, and street vendors serving up aromatic cuisine full of flavour.

We were soon into the fun of the launch at this new Doncaster eatery, where music beats greeted our arrival along with table tennis players inviting us to a game of ‘ping pong’! It was hard to resist the dance floor, with all eyes on a Thai performer in exuberant headdress further adding to the lively atmosphere of the event. Meanwhile a generous sprinkling of celebrities didn’t go unnoticed, including several from the ‘Married at First Sight’ TV Reality Show.

Meeting the owner and brainchild of Miss Ping’s, Winnie Chiang, soon led to the sharing of a few trade secrets followed by a cooking demonstration which included her signature dipping sauce. “Good food, need not be spoken about, only eaten. Thai food, for lovers of more than food,” said ‘Miss Ping’, resonating with many Thai food fans that night.

Sampling dishes from the extensive menu, we were soon dining on dumplings, chicken skewers in peanut sauce, stir fried noodles, signature fried rice, charcoal jumbo prawns, green curry chicken, and fish cakes. Those much loved Thai flavours with a beautiful balance of flavours and spices soon gave the tastebuds a workout and had us yearning for more – especially the crowd favourites on the night –  charcoal jumbo prawns and green curry!

Apart from the amazing food, with many dishes offering a contemporary twist on traditional favourites, Miss Ping’s also boasts a bar with a great selection of wines, beers, ciders and cocktails, as well as non-alcoholic choices like mocktails and tropical juices. Then there’s the Thai Refreshing Coolers, such as Thai Tea Float and Lychee Tea. A food and drinks menu sure to be a real crowd pleaser.

Miss Ping’s is open for both lunch and dinner, and conveniently located within Westfeld Doncaster’s premier restaurant and cafe precinct. The ambience of this eatery makes it an ideal setting for a date night, or for a group of friends or family looking for something special.
