A Little Bit of New York Luxury Comes to Inner City Melbourne – It’s Time to Train in Style

ASHLEY FAITHFULL TRAINING STUDIOS – MELBOURNE

PROMO-11

Introducing Melbourne’s first five-star training facility – Ashley Faithfull Training Studios. It’s a touch of New York in the middle of Melbourne, The Soho Club condensed and personalised for Melbourne’s most exclusive clientele. Ashley Faithfull Studios presents an innovative training space for the time poor executive. This first studio launched in March with an exclusive party on last week. The studio will pave the way for a discerning and exclusive audience who understands health and fitness is as high a priority as their career.

AF-Training-56

After over a decade of training Australia’s top executives and high-profile professionals and with the backing of a silent investor Faithfull found the perfect site for the studio. Set on King Street, the studio couldn’t be better positioned right in the middle of Melbourne’s thriving commercial district. With NAB, KPMG, Channel Seven and more all within a ten-minute walking distance.

A partnership with Green Street Juice Co. has the healthy food sorted out with the capacity to arrange broths and juices for clients delivered to their home.

The building is also very special and since taking it over Faithfull has gutted, redesigned and given the old building a new lease of life. Built in the 1880s it has a wonderful history with original bluestone greeting clientele. Set over two stories and with the roof top converted into a training space Faithfull has created the perfect outdoor area with amazing city views. The building also features a beautiful green wall, smoothie station and concierge desk with 24-hour access to clientele and finger print technology to get into the studio.

AF-Training-51Promo-4

“I’ve trained people extremely accomplished in their professions” says Ashley Faithfull, Founder, Owner and namesake of the studio “this includes judges, lawyers and top executives. In their offices they are seen as being at the top, respected and veneered which is important to these people. If a junior sees them sweating it out at their local club, it takes away some of that power. Plus, they just don’t need their staff seeing them at their most vulnerable, which exercise can be for many”.

A side effect of great success can be stress related weight gain after years of working towards making it. Half the battle can be the time taken to get somewhere to exercise or even to eat something healthy on the run.

“The Concierge Desk was key to the studio design” says Faithfull. “Our clients don’t want the hassle of arranging their own diaries and this is where the studio can help. We arrange their massage or physio session, liaise with their office and get it all locked in so they only need to look to their calendar for what they are doing next, including exercising”.

It’s no secret that high powered jobs come with high levels of stress with increased levels of cortisol in the body leading to accelerated ageing, heart attacks and cancer. With that in mind, Ashley Faithfull Studios should come as a relief to the time poor professional who is desperate to get their health back on track in the comfort of a private, luxurious environment.

QV MELBOURNE’S OUTDOOR CINEMA ON TILL 31st MARCH

QV Melbourne Outdoor Cinema Extends Summer with their Feb-March Flick Fest program

Have you ever noticed that summer gets better towards the end? QV Melbourne is extending the warmth with a new season of their outdoor deckchair cinema from 1 February- 31 March.

The Indian summer season, dubbed Flick Fest, is a new program of themed film screenings, with a curated selection of everything from cult classics to recent hits. Special pre-film events will include live performances, guest appearances, pop-up bars, bring-your-dog charity screenings, ‘A Dog’s Valentine’ and more.

Tickets are on sale now via qvcinema.com.au

Kicking off the program is a week celebrating strong female characters from 1-4 February, with iconic films featuring fearless female leads, launching with the most epic tribute to the girl’s road trip: Thelma and Louise. The launch week will include live entertainment and free themed drinks from a pop up bar.

Home to the city’s beloved bring-your-dog charity screenings, QV Cinema’s famed doggie dress up nights return on 9 and 10 February with pampered pooches encouraged to attend with their owners. QV will offer free pet photography over the two nights, inviting Melburnians to bring their pets along styled in their most creative costumes to watch Red Dog 2 and the loveable A Dog’s Purpose. Proceeds from ticket sales for both nights go to The Lost Dogs’ Home.

“We made the choice to mix up the programming this year, with a bit of an Indian summer slant. Melbourne is just so vibrant in March, with so many festivals on, that it’s a great time to be out and about in the city – catching a movie after a comedy or fashion show and enjoying something to eat or drink under the stars,” says QV Melbourne’s General Manager Lisa Fleming.

On Friday 9 February, it’s ‘A Dog’s Valentine’. QV Cinema and The Lost Dogs’ Home are inviting Melburnians to meet their most loyal Valentine – an adopted pup to provide with a forever home, and just in time for Valentine’s Day! Cinema goers will meet a range of adoption dogs at 7:30pm, when a matchmaker from The Lost Dogs’ Home will provide expert matchmaking tips. For example, Labrador-cross Rosco loves long walks on the beach and prefers driftwood to balls. He’s suited to someone with an active lifestyle and lots of energy. Other dogs who come with their owners are invited to arrive with fur fluffed, dressed in their date-night best. All pups will parade down the red carpet to sniff out their favourite Valentine.

“It’s a fun spin on Valentine’s Day – because who is going to stick with you through thick and thin? An adopted dog will give you a lifetime of love and companionship. At The Lost Dogs’ Home, we have many wonderful dogs waiting for their happily-ever-after. We are very thankful for QV Melbourne’s support in shining a light on shelter dogs to help them find homes,” says Ben Pocock, General Manager of Shelter & Outreach Services, The Lost Dogs’ Home.

From 22 – 25 February, QV Cinema offers the chance to see previous Oscar favourites La La Land and Arrival, 2018 Oscar nominee Get Out, plus multi Australian AACTA Award Winner Lion, on the big screen before the Academy Awards on 4 March.

As Fashion Week descends on Melbourne, QV invites you to get your fashion fix at the cinema with a series of stylish films screening from 1 – 4 March. From 8 – 11 March, QV is throwing it back with a week of cult 80s classics and will host a cocktail bar, with a different 80’s themed cocktail available each night.

Bring the kids along to Animation Week from 15 – 18 March and sing-a-long to your favourite musicals from 22 – 25 March, with free popcorn for cinema guests each night.

Melbourne’s only silent cinema is located right in the heart of the city on the Astroturf lawn in QV Square. The intimate open-air deckchair cinema remains one of the city’s most affordable outdoor cinemas. Tickets at $12* (plus $1 booking fee) include deckchair seating and high quality headphones for every audience member.

Sessions begin at 8:30pm Thursday to Sunday nights from 1 February to 31 March 2018, with special event screenings commencing at 7:30pm.

Film lovers can wander down Artemis or Red Cape Lane to the open-air courtyard for intimate screenings of QV Outdoor Cinema’s eclectic variety of films. Grab a burger from Grill’d, a Movenpick ice cream or a dark hot chocolate from Max Brenner and lounge back in an intimate 80-seat deckchair cinema nestled in the heart of the ‘city within the city’.

Worlds apart from other retail precincts in Melbourne, QV represents the quintessential Melbourne lifestyle. Intimate laneways in the urban precinct give visitors the freedom to wander and discover the eclectic mix of shops, cafes and restaurants at their own pace. Located on the corner of Lonsdale and Swanston Streets, QV has something for everyone with boutiques, enlightening entertainment and cosmopolitan bars and restaurants.

R U OK? and Taste of Melbourne Partner up for Charity Restaurant

MELBOURNE

In an Australian first, R U OK? and Taste of Melbourne in partnership with Electrolux are joining forces with celebrity chefs to launch ‘Conversation Bites’, a charity restaurant initiative to raise funds for suicide prevention and to encourage meaningful conversations – 30th November to 3rd December – YARRA PARK .

Celebrity chefs including Dan Hunter, Raymond Capaldi, Sam Pinzone and Geoff Lindsay, will combine their passion for food and suicide prevention to create a delicious ‘Conversation Bites’ menu and design a limited-edition dish for the R U OK? restaurant to share with loved ones.

A percentage of the proceeds from the restaurant will fund additional R U OK? campaigns and resources to generate more life-changing conversations.

R U OK? CEO Brendan Maher said: “Whether you’re a foodie or not, tough times can sometimes wear us down. That’s why R U OK? has teamed up with Taste of Australia, to get people together over food. Because a problem shared isa problem halved, anda great place to start is by asking “are you ok?”

“Eight people per day take their own lives in Australia. So, how do we reduce that number? We need people to talk about it – not just on R U OK? Day, but 365 days a year.

“We are really proud to launch this first charity restaurant at Taste of Melbourne, and hope to replicate across the country.”

‘Conversation Bites’ pop up restaurant and menu will be available exclusively at Taste of Melbourne, with four dishes being created by the line-up of chefs.

‘The Memory of Water’ – Chapel Off Chapel Till Sunday 26th November

‘The Memory of Water’ now playing in Melbourne

 Play Review

by Connie Lambeth

MOW 2

The tussles, drama and follies of life are brilliantly woven into the plot of ‘The Memory of Water’ by Shelagh Stephenson, playing till 26th November at Prahran’s Chapel off Chapel theatre.

This pacy, award-winning UK play centres around three sisters preparing for the funeral of their mother Vi. Within the tight confines of Vi’s bedroom, the escalating conflict of the estranged siblings plays out in this well-scripted family ‘drama’ laced with comedy and metaphors. The single room stage setting ensures audience attention is focused on the characters within. Thrust together at the death of their mother, old grievances give way to protracted disagreements and emotional outbursts, in a seemingly persistent verbal contest. With ‘memory’ as the play’s key theme, childhood recollections bubble to the surface, revealing each sister as having her own take on events, adding to the fray.

The sisters are vastly different as siblings often are. Mary is the ‘middle child’, a doctor…the clever, self righteous and overbearing one. Her frailties are revealed when we learn of her affair with Mike, a married man unwilling to leave his ill wife, her teen pregnancy kept secret all this time, and the desire to have her own child now she’s thirty nine. An interesting twist is the conversational presence of her deceased mother as an apparition. It seems no matter how hard Mary denies she has some of her mother’s traits, they are ever present, in a gesture, an expression, a word. Vi’s memory lives on.

The martyr attitude of eldest sister Theresa is destined to annoy sisters and audience alike. Her natural therapy business is an important element, with homeopathy pushing memory to the fore once again, as no matter how diluted with water, the healing powers remain, much like the essence of the mother who lives on in her daughters. Theresa’s weaknesses too are fleshed out, as tensions rise and she hits the whisky bottle as a non-drinker, much to her husband Frank’s angst.

Meanwhile Catherine the youngest, provides comic relief with her attention-seeking personality needy of love wherever she can find it. 78 lovers and still counting it seems, as she smothers her woes with alcohol and joints, grieving more about her Spanish boyfriend dumping her than the loss of her mother! When conflict between the elder two sisters intensifies, there is an almost collective sigh of relief when Catherine stumbles in with quirky quips, an oversharing personality, and later, inappropriate funereal clothes, perhaps designed to relax the tension on stage and in the audience. It worked.

The support roles of Mike as Mary’s lover, and Frank, Theresa’s tolerant spouse, add a steadying influence amid the disputes of the women. The men also manage to successfully bring the outdoors inside, with clothing, hand rubs, and references to freezing conditions. Perhaps playwright Stephenson crafted this concept as another metaphor to reflect the icy weather on the outer, and  frosty relations on the inner, or maybe to tell us the setting is winter in the north of England. Either way, the cold was a prominent feature and the audience felt it, helped along with the aircon!

The cast put up an impressively strong performance, demonstrating the tapestry of emotions on display when ordinary people are faced with a situation beyond their everyday realm. Meanwhile the cello added an ethereal quality, contributing to the mood and pathos of the story.

Producer Darren Mort has the last word when he says:

“Please enjoy our production of ‘The Memory of Water’ – you will laugh and cry all at once, but most of all, you will understand the importance of relationships and the art of forgiveness”.
