OKTOBERFEST Returns to Hophaus Southgate Sat 16th Sept – Annual Dachshund Race Saturday 23rd September

MELBOURNE

OKTOBERFEST AT HOPHAUS SOUTHGATE

16th September to 22nd October

Teckelrennen Annual Dachshund Race Saturday 23 September

Time to don your dirndl and lederhosen, as Oktoberfest returns to Melbourne at Hophaus Southgate from Saturday 16 September to Sunday 22 October

With over six million people predicted to attend the 207th anniversary of Oktoberfest in Germany, Hophaus Bavarian Bier Bar Grill will transport Melbourne to Munich with a five-week program of festivities and events from 16 September to 22 October 2017.

Hophaus’ Oktoberfest 2017 will see the return of a cult favourite calendar event: the Teckelrennen Annual Dachshund Race on 23 September. Short dog legs will race with fury and fanfare for the third annual event that draws swarms of fest and dog lovers alike. Dog costumes are expected to increase in creativity as competition for Best Dressed Dachshund becomes ever more fierce.

The official Opening Day on Saturday 16 September will see former Melbourne Football Club Captain, David Neitz, trade his football jersey for Lederhosen and take over official duties as Hoptoberfest’s Mayor for this year’s festivities. With his German heritage proudly on show, Neitz, also the founder of Brewmanity Beer Company, will welcome guests to the fest launch at Hophaus with the traditional Tapping of the Keg at midday and free bier frothing until the keg runs dry.

The most paw-pular event on the spring racing calendar, Hophaus’ Annual Dachshund Race is co-presented by Southgate Melbourne and My Dachshund Online, and will raise money for Dachshund Rescue Australia.

‘The dog race that stops the nation’ is held in the Southgate Podium Courtyard with heats starting at 11am followed by finals. Witness the four-legged frenzy as the dachshunds make a mad dash down the 15-metre racetrack in the bid for the top prize.

Hophaus is proud to have raised over $6200 for Dachshund Rescue Australia over the last two years, with over 150 sausage dogs having taken part.

The dogged Costume Parade will be held at midday.  Watch pampered pooches strut their stuff down the ‘dogwalk’ for the coveted prize and then continue the festivities at Hophaus with a refreshing German lager, German food and plenty of entertainment with one of Melbourne’s best German bands the Black Forest Trio playing into the night.

LAST 2 NIGHTS TO CATCH MUST-SEE ‘FEATHERED & FIERCE’ AT SYDNEY FRINGE FESTIVAL

FEATHERED AND FIERCE

2 SHOWS LEFT – FRIDAY 8th & SATURDAY 9th SEPTEMBER!

Review by Roswitha Schleicher – Sydney Events writer for The Australia Times News

Producer Lauren Eisinger and samba sensation Amy Mills take their audience on an emotional journey as they invite them behind the scenes of the glamorous world of samba, in their bold new show Feathered and Fierce.

Stage One at the HPG Festival Hub lays bare, with black curtains usually shielding curious eyes, drawn, blending with the infinite darkness of this vast space, in contrast with the blaze of stage lights.

As the eight performers enter the stage in what appears to be Amazonian inspired ensembles, anticipation rises and the crowd falls silent. Just a few beats into animated samba tunes and the Amy Mills Samba Pro Team bust out a few of their signature dance moves, raising cheers from the audience. And thus, our hour long journey through the dazzling world of samba begins.

Thoughtfully choreographed by World Solo Samba Champion Amy Mills, Feathered & Fierce reveals a story of passion and dedication through the world of Latin dance. With multiple on-stage costume changes and numerous moving performances accompanied by a contemporary playlist, Amy and her team lead their audience on a journey, unveiling the various aspects and emotional ups and downs of preparing for the big samba stage.

This unique show is every bit as personal and mesmerising as producer Lauren Eisinger intended, and has proven to be one of the ‘must-see’ performances of this year’s Sydney Fringe Festival.

‘Feathered and Fierce’ premieres at Sydney Fringe Festival 2017

Behind the scenes with dance champions: Feathered and Fierce premieres at Sydney Fringe Festival 2017

A World Champion Samba dancer takes audiences beyond the glamour to the sweat, grit and incredible strength it takes to win in the highly competitive Latin dance world.

Lauren Eisinger and Amy Mills are proud to present Feathered and Fierce, an unorthodox Latin dance show premiering at Sydney Fringe Festival from 5 – 9 September 2017 for five shows only. Tickets are selling fast via sydneyfringe.com.

Director and Choreographer Amy Mills (World Samba Solo Champion 2015) has led her all female team to three National Samba Championships (2013, 2014, 2016). In their stage debut, Amy and her team will reveal all in an intimate visceral dance performance, at one of Sydney Fringe’s hottest new warehouse venues.

Feathered and Fierce will throw back the curtain and reveal the raw strength, failures and dogged determination that it takes to create a moment in the spotlight,” says Amy.

Producer Lauren Eisinger is known for her unique and eye-catching stage and circus shows, at some of Australia and the world’s most eclectic festivals and venues.

“This is Latin dance like you’ve never seen it before,” says Lauren.

“Eight powerful women push their physical and mental limits without restraint. In this stripped back space you’ll see the sweat, hear every breath, feel the camaraderie and find the drive that fuels this world-class team.”

Amy Mills plans to create a unique experience for audiences.

“We are giving audience members a real look behind the scenes, incorporating costume racks, ladders and road cases into a Latin dance, with performers who don’t leave the space throughout the show. We will use the versatility of the warehouse space to stage scenes in and around the audience, resulting in a highly immersive experience,” says Amy.

Feathered and Fierce will feature a soundscape unique to the troupe’s shows: a mix of instrumental Latin rhythms and modern pop music.

Feathered and Fierce will be an up-close and personal experience of the world within the world of competitive Latin dance.

Herald the End of Winter with a Celebration of Light & Play

QV Melbourne’s Laneway Series launches with Light / Play

First Australian work from Danish artist Tine Bech

25th August to 10th September

QV Melbourne is thrilled to announce the QV Laneway Series: a seasonal program of ongoing interactive outdoor events, festivals and activations in the QV Square and surrounding laneways.

To launch the series, QV has commissioned globally acclaimed Danish artist Tine Bech to complete her first Australian work, which will be the centrepiece of a new interactive program of events called Light / Play. The celebration of light and play will herald the end of winter from Friday 25 August – Sunday 10 September.

d54b4502-8521-46b6-a1f3-4b752077be0d

With a PhD in ‘Play’, Tine Bech is a multidisciplinary artist who creates innovative interactive art that encourages participation and most of all, play.

Tine’s new work, entitled Colour Me Beautiful, will create a playful new environment for social interaction, experienced for the very first time at QV Melbourne. Tine Bech will visit Melbourne to premiere the new artwork, and will engage with Melbourne audiences as they interact and respond to her work.

Featuring five colourful runways leading to a vivid landscape of images, Colour Me Beautiful invites the public to play and perform. The interactive installation will capture images of audience members on each runway; live posting them onto a 5.8 metre by 3.2 metre multicolour screen. The work invites Melburnians and visitors alike to walk the coloured grass runway, strike a pose and be captured in a bright maze of colour. Participants in the work will each receive a link to their images to share their experience with others. Tine’s intention for Colour Me Beautiful is to exemplify and extend the play inherent in human connection through social sharing.

Transforming both the environment and human behaviour through the creative possibilities of play making, Colour Me Beautiful will transform the open air QV Square into an interactive digital art playground.

What: Light Play: an end of winter program of interactive events at QV Melbourne. Escape the last cold days of winter with an innovative and playful celebration of light and play – where colour, art, performance, music and food come together. FREE.

Where: QV Square, Level 2, QV Melbourne, corner Swanston and Lonsdale Streets, Melbourne
